I received this cleansing balm in Marie Claire's Summer 2015 Edit of The Parcel (reviewed here).

I was super excited to see it because I love cleansing balms and I'd run out of mine, plus I'd never tried anything from Trilogy before but I'd heard great things about the brand so I was pleased to try something from its range.

While there's nothing wrong with this product, I don't love it and I've used better balms before. I've also been comparing it to a cleansing cream and cleansing oil I've been testing, and those do the job better than this does so it's not one I would buy.

Trilogy claims/product details:
  • Melt away makeup for clean, supple, hydrated and nourished skin
  • A lush, end-of-the-day cleansing balm to remove foundation, mascara and lipstick like nothing else - even long-wear and waterproof formulations
  • Combines a rich blend of pure plant oils and contains mango butter, rosehip oil and coconut oil
  • Melts on contact with warm skin, dissolving impurities and leaving your face perfectly cleansed, supple and silky-smooth
  • To use: scoop ¼ teaspoon onto fingertips and massage onto dry skin; as the balm melts, concentrate around eyelashes and areas of heavy makeup; wipe off with a warm, damp face cloth
  • RRP $36.90 AUD for 80ml

Verdict

As mentioned above, there's nothing hugely wrong with this product - it's just that I've used better cleansing balms before (eg my HG Happy Skincare Cloud 9 Deep Cleansing Balm, reviewed here).

This one's hard-ish in texture like a lip balm when you touch it, but it does warm and melt on the skin when applied. It has a nice, inoffensive smell that's quite faint (I'm smelling fruit and coconut), so you might be ok with it if you don't like scented products.

You only need a small amount each time because it does melt and spread (so it's more like an oil in texture once massaged onto the face), and I haven't noticed any difference in its efficacy when I use more or less of it - so I wouldn't slather it on to improve the results, but of course it's worth playing around with products to work out how they work best for you.

It does a reasonable job of melting away 'easy' makeup like my tinted moisturisers and powders, but I haven't had huge success with it when it comes to waterproof mascara. Most online reviewers have commented on this, so don't expect it to remove your eye makeup: you may still need a dedicated eye makeup remover to do that job.

While it does feel nourishing and soothing on the skin, I don't feel that it cleans well. It does dissolve that surface layer of makeup, but my skin doesn't feel clean after using this so I always need to cleanse with a different product after this one; otherwise my face doesn't feel clean.

On the product claims: it does melt away light makeup but not the heavy stuff or mascara; it does leave the skin feeling supple, hydrated and nourished; but it doesn't deliver a good overall cleanse - at least in my experience.

I've also seen a few reviewers say that the product requires too much work to remove makeup and they would rather use a facial wipe or micellar water to get the job done in a fraction of the time. While I don't mind spending some extra time massaging my face with this, I can see how it would be an issue for some.

Overall, this is a nice product but it's not one I would buy because I think better options exist - particularly if you want something that cleanses really well.

As you'll know if you read this blog, I've recently fallen for OGX haircare, and fallen hard.

This product is no exception, and I've been using it in conjunction with the Hydrating Macadamia Oil Shampoo & Conditioner from these guys, and my hair has never been in better condition than it is now.

The only thing I would say about this product is: go easy with application! The first time I used it, I didn't love it because it left my hair too hydrated and feeling heavy and coated, but I worked out that I was using too much product and that was why my hair was left a little lank - so I now use even less of this mask than I would my conditioner, and it works perfectly. Woot woot!

It comes in a generous tub and the product should last for ages because I only need to use a little each time and apply it about once a fortnight. This means it's a good investment, even though it costs more than I would normally pay for haircare.

Having said this, it's not super expensive and OGX is often on special at one of the big pharmacies or supermarkets, so it's worth shopping around and waiting for specials. Of the OGX products I've tried so far, the brown macadamia versions work best for my hair - but plenty of other products are available from the brand so hopefully you can find one that suits your hair.

OGX claims/product details:
  • When your hair is parched, this yummy blend will help bring back the shine
  • Softens and moisturises brittle, dry hair
  • Blended with macadamia oil for conditioning, bamboo extract for moisturising, and sugar cane extract for softening
  • For all hair types, but best for dry and damaged locks that need repair
  • To use: after shampooing, apply generously to wet hair, working through to the ends; wait three to five minutes (for extremely dry hair, apply and cover with a shower cap and leave in for 20 minutes); rinse hair thoroughly
  • RRP $17.99 AUD for 237ml, but do shop around

Verdict

I love this product and it's the best hair mask I've ever used. I still do love my Royal Moroccan Hair Mask Treatment (reviewed here), but this OGX mask delivers the same results, requires less product per application, and is available for a fraction of the price.

It's a pale yellow cream that looks and feels like custard, and has a faint scent that's fresh and smells sweet like tropical fruit.

It's quite a thick product and I do recommend starting with a small amount and working it through the hair to the ends. If you're like me and are used to slathering on enough product to hydrate your dry hair, I wouldn't do that with this product: try a smaller amount first (even if it doesn't feel like enough) and then use more next time if that doesn't give you your desired results.

On that, be sure to wash all the product out! I've missed a patch a couple of times and it's left my hair looking dull and greasy in that spot - dry hair can 'cling' to products like this so it's essential to do a really good rinse.

I haven't tried leaving it on for twenty minutes under a shower cap, but that may work best for you if your hair is super dry and needs extra attention.

I've also seen a couple of online reviewers say they use this prior to shampooing and conditioning, which is another way you could try this if you find the product leaves your hair too heavy and coated after use.

What I love about this product is that it leaves my dry, frizzy hair super shiny, soft, manageable and hydrated. Like the matching OGX Hydrating Oil Shampoo & Conditioner, it's also the only product I've ever found that almost completely de-frizzes my hair - even that hard, wiry stuff around the hairline that was previously impossible to tame - so I don't need to use leave-in conditioners or straightening treatments when I use this because the hard work is already done. Amazing!

Yes I think this product meets its claims and I can't recommend it enough. I've given it an HG tag and it's definitely one I'll repurchase when I've finished my tub.

Have you used any haircare from OGX? Let me know what you think of it if so : )
