Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Anti-ageing Night Moisturiser - review

I was recently sent three Neutrogena products to review: this night cream and the matching day cream (reviewed here) and eye cream (reviewed here).
While I do think it's a decent night cream and the best of the three items I've tested, I haven't seen the kinds of results I would expect from a retinol product so it's not one I would buy.
Still, if you're new to retinol and need an inexpensive 'starter' product, I reckon you could do a lot worse than this and I've seen other reviewers say that they have seen results from using the three items combined.
There are the three items above.
The opaque packaging is designed well because it protects the contents and I like that the day and night creams come with a pump you can twist to close.
Neutrogena claims/product details:
- Clinically proven to help reduce the visible signs of ageing:
- Improves the look of fine lines and wrinkles, including crow's feet and cheek wrinkles
- Brightens and evens skintone
- Smooths fine lines and texture
- Rejuvenates and nourishes skin for a more radiant look
- RRP $39.99 AUD for 29ml
Of the three Neutrogena products we were sent to test, this night cream is my favourite. Both the day cream and eye cream weren't nourishing enough for my dry skin, but this one's a little richer so it keeps my skin feeling comfortable and hydrated without the need to reach for other products.
It's a lightweight cream with a fruity/sweet scent that's not overpowering - although note that it has a faint chemical smell beneath the sweetness that lingers for a while on the skin.
As mentioned above, the opaque packaging is designed well because it protects the contents and I like that the product has a pump you can twist to close.
The cream spreads well and feels nourishing without feeling heavy. Unlike the day cream, I feel that this is being properly absorbed and delivering moisture where I need it. While it does leave behind a slightly greasy residue, I personally don't mind this because my skin needs all the grease it can get!
Do note that I can only use this and the matching day and eye creams for three or four days running before my skin starts to feel dry and look ashy. This often happens to me with retinol products, so what I've been doing is using it for three days, then using something else for a day or two, then returning to this product.
As for claims, it does have a slight brightening and plumping effect - at least temporarily - but this may partly be due to the dewy finish. I also haven't noticed any impact on skintone or wrinkles over time, although this could be because I can't use it every day (and I've been using skincare with active ingredients for a long time, so maybe the hard work is already done).
All in all, this is a nice, hydrating night cream and it's not expensive, but it's not effective on my skin.
