Mellow Cosmetics Blush in Bronze - review

We received this blush in our January 2015 Violet Boxes.

I received the pink version (see review here) and, while I like the product itself, pink isn't the best colour for my skintone so I managed to pick up the bronze version via the FB Violet Box Swap group.

I've now given the pink one away to a friend who looks much better in it. But I've no plans of passing on this one!

The first thing that sold me on this blush is that it's a matte product, which I much prefer. You can always add shimmer if you want to, and many shimmer products tend to accentuate open pores so I generally steer clear of all but the most amazing ones.

The second thing I liked about this is that it's sheer, which means you're less likely to over-apply it (and you can of course build it), plus it's easier to work with and apply evenly. This is good for lazy lasses like me who like getting things done quickly and with a minimum of fuss. I'm not a major fan of precision products because I'm likely to stuff them up on days when I'm rushing to get ready while my daughter's asleep.

Plus it's a good colour, nicely brown and not ashy (I don't like ashy bronzers because they make me look sallow):

About Mellow

Mellow wasn't a brand I'd heard of before Violet Box so I've looked into it a bit.

Mellow aims to produce high quality cosmetics at affordable prices. Its products are designed and tested in New Zealand, and they're cruelty free. Products are also made with the goodness of natural minerals and they are all paraben free.

See Mellow's website for more info.

See above and below swatches. Above is taken indoors with flash, and below is outside in natural light. You can see how sheer it is. This is a good thing!

Note: this can pull a little orange on some complexions, so if you don't like that, do be aware of it. I personally prefer bronzers with a slight orange or red base, so the colour works for me.

There we are below on my face. It adds a nice, natural-looking glow and it's a product I can see myself using a lot.

Verdict

This is a pretty decent little blush for the price. It's nicely matte with a good texture and it applies and blends well. As mentioned, it's sheer but buildable so you can achieve the amount of colour you want, without the risk of overdoing it that you often find with super pigmented products.

You could also use this as an eyeshadow if you wanted to - it would make a good crease colour. I don't think it's the right kind of shade for contouring (not for me, anyway), but if you have the right skintone, you could try it for that purpose too.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this because I haven't had a massive amount of luck with cheaper blushes (unlike eg cheaper foundations), but this is great. It's quite soft and buttery, and it's a pleasure to use - particularly when you're in a rush!

Ticks from me. It's the kind of product that might eventually make its way on to my Project Pan list because I'd be happy enough to use it every day.
