Jing Ai Velvet Shine Lip Jewel Lip Crayon in Pink-A-Boo - review and swatches

I wasn't going to open it and use it because pink really isn't my colour and I thought I'd be better off gifting it to someone else, but in the end I decided to give it a crack because my lip gloss stores are dwindling and I'm always in need of a hydrating lip product - even if I don't love the colour and decide to just use it at home.
I have to say, I'm glad I opened it because it's a great product and it isn't too in-your-face pink if you apply it with a light hand, so it will definitely get used.
On top of that, it is indeed hydrating and it doesn't transfer as easily as some lip products do, so I'm pleased that I received it : )

Jing Ai claims/product details:
- Gives your lips a powerful dose of long-lasting, highly pigmented colour
- The formula is infused with 100% natural macadamia oil, shea butter and jojoba seed oil
- This paraben free formula keeps your lips looking glamorous throughout the day with beautiful hydration and a sexy pout that you will love
- No sharpening needed: just twist the lip crayon to advance the tip
- RRP $29 AUD for 2.7g
Below I've swatched it in direct sunlight. You can see it's nice and creamy:
There we are again in natural light:
My bare lips for reference (I've lined them with a lip liner):
There's the colour in direct sunlight (I've applied it heavily):
And in natural light (I've applied less here):
And in the shade:
Verdict
As mentioned, I'm really glad I decided to open this and give it a go, and I'll definitely be keeping it.
It's one of those products you can chuck in your handbag and use for a quick swipe of hydration and a slick of colour, if like me you're not big on really pink lips.
The best things about this product for me - other than ease of use - would definitely be the creamy/hydrating texture and the lasting power. It won't stay on your lips all day (particularly if you eat and drink), but it certainly fares better than many other products.
Indeed, I was surprised that it didn't completely transfer as soon as I drank my coffee (particularly given how creamy it is, since creamy products are notorious for coming off as soon as you dare to breathe!), and although some of the glossiness is gone after you eat/drink, it does leave a nice stain behind and the colour is still very much there, so that's a plus.
I also like that you don't need to sharpen it, although I haven't come across a lip crayon yet that you do need to sharpen, so that's not really a selling point as far as I'm concerned.
On the claims I haven't mentioned yet: it is reasonably pigmented, but it doesn't have to be if you apply it with a light hand (that's a plus for me); you can tell it's got some beautifully hydrating ingredients; and it does make your lips look nice and glossy (I'm using the word 'glossy' instead of 'glamorous' here ; )).
In sum, I'm really pleased with this product - which is saying something considering that pink doesn't suit me and I generally don't wear it. You have to love pleasant surprises!
Ticks from me.
