Real Techniques Fine Liner Brush - review

Next up in my individual reviews of the Real Techniques starter set for eyes is the Fine Liner Brush (which I've also seen referred to as the Pixel Point Eyeliner Brush).
It's not a brush I use often because it doesn't have a lot of functions and I generally prefer the Accent Brush (reviewed here) for precision jobs like applying highlighter to the inner corners of my eyes, but I do use it occasionally for applying shadow to my waterline.
Real Techniques claims/product details:
- For precision application of liquid and cream eyeliner
- Designed by Samantha Chapman, makeup artist
- Made with hand-cut synthetic taklon bristles and aluminium handles
- RRP $45 AUD for the five-brush starter set, but do shop around (I paid about $25)
As mentioned, this isn't a brush I reach for often because I prefer the Accent Brush from this set for things you might use this one for, including highlighting the inner corners of my eyes and also smudging colour along the upper lashline.
As you may know, I don't like harsh lines around my eyes so I tend not to use liquid or gel eyeliners, meaning I can't comment on whether this brush is useful for applying those - but I've seen many reviewers say that this is a terrible brush for that purpose because it's too thick and you can't use it to create a fine line. Judging from my experience of the brush, I would say that's probably true: so I wouldn't be reaching for this brush if that's the kind of effect you're after.
The issue with this brush, I think, is that it's too soft and flexible to be used for its intended purpose. And because it's so thin, there's little else it can be used for - so unlike other brushes in the set, it doesn't have alternative functions if it doesn't work for you in the way it's meant to. The only thing I can think of is perhaps using it as a lip brush, but I haven't tried that so I'm not sure how it fares for that purpose.
As mentioned above, the only thing I use this brush for is to apply eyeshadow along my lower waterline (I don't like black but instead use a mid-brown shade, because you can't tell I'm wearing it but it makes my small eyes look so much bigger than they are), and at the moment I'm using a decent brown pencil for that purpose, so this brush hasn't been used for a while but it will be again once that pencil is finished.
In sum, this is my second least-favourite brush in the set (the brow brush is the worst) and I won't use it very often, but it's still one I'm glad to own because I have nothing else like it.
