Best in Beauty 2017: bath & body
/
0 Comments
Yesterday I wrote my yearly favourites for haircare (see here) and I'm back today with my bath & body favourites for 2017.
Unlike the haircare list, there's only one repeat product so it's a much 'fresher' list than the haircare one!
Speaking of last year's favourites, they're here if you're interested.
So without further ado...
Best soap: Whitsunday Myrtle Lemon Tea Myrtle Body Bar
Full review here. I'm not a soap person (I'm all about the gels and washes), but this was a favourite in 2017 for the scent alone and I wanted to include it for those soap-loving people out there who want something new to try.
It's a three-layered soap that smells wonderfully lemony and it lathers beautifully. Although it's not the richest lather I've tried, it's definitely creamy and I enjoyed using it.
While I wouldn't necessarily buy it because I still prefer body gels, I wanted to mention it anyway because it would make a good gift for someone who loves soaps. Plus it's from a little-known brand, so chances are, most people won't already have tried it.
Best shower oil: La Roche-Posay Lipikar Cleansing Oil
This is one of those products that I wasn't expecting to love because it doesn't look like much, but my dry body skin absolutely loved it and I've already managed to grab another one (which came as a GWP, huzzah). Full review here.
It smells nice in a gentle way and it lathers beautifully - much better than other shower oils I've tried - plus a little goes a long way so my tube lasted for ages.
It leaves my skin feeling soft, clean and hydrated, and it was a great product to keep my body happy throughout winter. Indeed, I can totally see this being a staple in my shower from now on because I have dry skin and there's been nothing better for it. Love.
Best shower foam: Rituals, The Ritual of Sakura Shower Foam
If you read this blog, this particular item will come as no surprise: it's easily my favourite bath & body product of all time, and one of my favourite products period. I've reviewed it here.
It smells divine and the foam it creates is so rich and luxurious that you'd be forgiven for thinking you're using a high-end product - but in fact at $15 AUD a pop, these foams are inexpensive and you can often find them on sale if you're prepared to wait.
I won't bang-on too much about this product here because you're probably sick of hearing about it, but this is the only item in this list that I mentioned last year too, so that tells you something.
I can't imagine ever being without one of these in my shower. So, so good.
This is an unassuming little product that doesn't announce itself with fanfare (unlike eg the Rituals shower foam above), but it gets you in the end and I love it. I've reviewed it here.
It's a thick, gel-like product and I can see why they've called it a paste. What constantly surprises me about it is just how little you need to get the job done, and also how hydrating it is.
I've used shower oils that don't feel anywhere near as nourishing as this does (even a shower oil from Rituals itself), so something about the formula absolutely meets the claim that the product is 'ultra-nourishing' and 'good for dry skin'.
I first fell in love with this when we lived in Berlin in 2012 and 2013, and once I was finally able to get my Australian hands on it again, I fell in love with it twice.
Best body scrub: Rituals, The Ritual of Sakura Body Scrub
Full review here. This was easily the best body scrub that I used in 2017.
It's a standard sugar scrub that contains little sugar grains suspended in oil, and the grains are soft and small enough that they give you a good scrub without feeling too abrasive.
It also smells divine. It's hard to describe what sakura smells like if you haven't smelled it, but it somehow manages to be sweet without being too much and there's something complex about it that really appeals.
Plus it feels really nice on the skin as you rub it in - exfoliating but nourishing at the same time - and after use my skin feels refreshed and also hydrated from the oils.
Beautiful.
Best body oil: Palmer's Moisturising Body Oil
I have dry skin so I'm always up for oils of any description, and this one's especially lovely so it's been a pleasure to use. I've reviewed it here.
Not only does it have that familiar, rich and chocolaty Palmer's scent, but it also hydrates my body beautifully and a little goes a long way so the bottle is lasting me ages.
It spreads and absorbs well, and although I wouldn't call it a dry oil (it does leave a slight residue), it's not super heavy so it doesn't feel like it's too rich. Plus if you wait for sales, you can grab it for five or six bucks. Yay to that.
While in previous years Bio-Oil might have been my favourite in this category, this year it's definitely this Palmer's oil and I'll be interested to see if anything can beat it.
Best everyday body cream: Nivea Firming Body Lotion with Q10 Plus
This was one of those products that completely surprised me because it actually meets all its claims! So often brands promise the world in product descriptions so I wasn't expecting this to live up to its claims, but it did. I've reviewed it here.
This promises to give you more nourished skin in two weeks, and that absolutely happened for me. It also has a slight firming and toning effect as claimed, plus it leaves my skin feeling softer and more supple to boot.
And it's a cheapie. What more can you ask for?! This has quickly become one of my favourite body creams and I've used it to death this year - to the point that I've gone through two large bottles and can't wait to buy more.
Best 'luxury' body cream: Rituals, The Ritual of Sakura Body Cream
Full review here. Even though this isn't the most expensive body cream on the market, I'm calling it a 'luxury' product because it's lovely and it's the perfect way to treat yourself to something that you mightn't normally pay this much for.
A gorgeous product.
Best hand cream: Institut Karite Paris Verbena & Shea Hand Cream
To date, this is the only metal tube that I've ever cut open - which tells you how much I enjoyed this product. It's easily one of the nicest hand creams I've ever tried, and if we hadn't already blown budget this year, then I would be stocking up on more in the Maslow & Co closing-down sale. I've reviewed it here.
It's hard to describe why I enjoyed this hand cream so much - I mean, a hand cream is a hand cream - but the whole experience of using it was an absolute pleasure.
Best self-tanning cream: Garnier BodySummer Sun-kissed Look Nourishing Lotion (Medium to Dark Skin)
Full review here. So far, this is my HG tanning cream and I'm yet to find one I prefer.
It's a beautifully rich cream that smells like apricot kernel oil. It's not an overpowering scent but it's definitely there, so do test this first if you don't like scented products.
It spreads and absorbs well, so I've had no issues with uneven application or streakiness. It also feels insanely hydrating on my dry skin and it's a pleasure to use for this reason alone because my body always feels comfortable and nourished after using this product.
Best of all, it gives me a natural, even-looking tan that never looks too strong or orange. Plus you don't need to use this every day (perhaps once or twice a week, depending on how often you exfoliate) and I've had no issues with stained sheets or clothes when using this.
In sum

It was easily the nicest body cream I tried this year, to the point that I rationed the last half of the tub (so I only used it on my arms and upper chest) because it smelled so divine and felt so lovely on the skin that I didn't want to waste anything this special on my legs.
It's a whipped product and the texture is somehow light and rich at the same time, and while I did enjoy the texture, do note that this cream does leave a slight film (I noticed this especially on my hands), and while I personally don't mind this because I have dry skin, it's something to be aware of if you don't like products that don't vanish completely into the skin.

I loved the look of the packaging; I loved the lemony scent of this green version; and I loved that it was hydrating enough to be used overnight but it also didn't leave a tacky finish so I could use it during the day, too. I'll miss it.

A fantastic, underrated product.

That's all from me.
I'm surprised by the size of my list this year (ten products total). Just goes to show that it's been a good year in the bath & body department!
Do let me know in the comments what body products you've been loving this year.
Hope all's well with you, and speak soon x
