Sukin Natural Deodorant - review

It feels like ages since I wrote a review post because I've been so busy with work, so blogging has taken a backseat lately and the posts I've been able to write have mainly related to panning projects etc - so it's nice to sit down and write a review post again, although do bear with me because I'm feeling a little rusty!

As you may know, I've been cycling through natural deodorants this year because my skin has become sensitive to standard deodorants, and this Sukin version is next on the list. While I think it's ok for winter, it's not the best one I've found to date so I wouldn't buy it again. More on that below.

Sukin claims/product details:

  • An aluminium free deodorant that provides a natural option for preventing unwanted odour
  • Aloe vera, burdock and nettle extracts help to cool and soothe skin after shaving, while added zinc helps prevent bacteria growth, keeping you smelling fresh
  • Citrus and aromatic oils including tangerine, mandarin, lavender and vanilla provide a fresh aroma and leave you feeling clean and refreshed
  • Tip: if you've been using an antiperspirant, it can take a few weeks for the armpit to detox, so keep up with it! Keep in mind that you will still perspire with a natural deodorant, but it will be odour free
  • We recommend a patch test before use because it is not recommended for sensitive skin
  • To use: spray body and underarms as required
  • RRP $6.95 AUD for 125ml, but do shop around

Verdict

I think this deodorant is ok and it's working well enough for me during the winter months, but it's not without issue so I wouldn't buy it again.

It's a fluid deodorant that comes in a spray bottle, and it has that familiar Sukin scent I've always enjoyed. Do note, though, that the fragrance isn't strong so it doesn't linger on the skin and I can't smell it on my clothes either - which may be a good thing for some, but I prefer a slightly stronger scent that does more towards keeping me smelling fresh throughout the day.

One thing to note about this product is that I need to use quite a bit to get it to work. To start with I used a couple of sprays per armpit, but I found that wasn't enough to stop me stinking so I now use five sprays per arm - meaning I'm getting through the bottle rather quickly, so it's not great value on a price-per-use basis.

Also, this stuff doesn't dry well so it always runs down my body after application, and I've seen a few reviewers comment on this aspect so it's something to be aware of (see eg beautyheaven's website for more reviews).

Another thing to note is that my armpits have become a little itchy after using this daily for the past month, so I agree with the product claim that mentions it may not suit sensitive skin. While the itching is nowhere near as bad as what I've experienced with standard deodorants, I don't expect any sensitivity with natural deodorants so I'm disappointed that this one has irritated me a bit.

As for effect, it does work and I haven't been stinky while I've been using it, but it's currently winter so I'm not sure how well it would go in summer when I'm likely to get more sweaty. Still, I've used other natural deodorants that don't work during the cooler months at all, so this one's better than average on that front and I reckon it's fine to use if you're someone who doesn't perspire that much.

Overall I think this deodorant is ok but it's not my favourite (I prefer eg A'kin's offering, reviewed here) so I wouldn't buy it again - especially because it has left my underarms feeling a little itchy, and that's not what I expect from my natural deodorants.

Ok but not perfect.
