So Susan Intense Eyeshadow Palette with Coated Pigments - review and swatches

We received this eyeshadow palette in our October Lust Have It women's boxes.

At the time I hadn't been lucky enough to trial eyeshadows from higher end brands, so I was measuring it against lesser shadows. Now, however, having picked up a Stila 12-shadow palette for $68, I'm wondering why anyone would spend $35 on a palette like this one. Yes it's a bit cheaper and you do get four shadows, but for that amount I'd expect a lot more from the palette overall. Even the packaging is cheap and the compact doesn't come with a mirror.

Anyhoo. Let's have a look.

So Susan claims/product details:
  • The ultimate in smokey, intense eye colour
  • Formulated with coated pigments to give you stretchable, long-lasting colour
  • 100% cruelty free
  • RRP $35 for 8g
  • Shelf-life after opening: 12 months

Not another batch of shimmer eyeshadows, my golly. I can confirm that I have never, ever received a matte eyeshadow in all my years of being a sub box addict.

At least I didn't have a lavender eyeshadow when I got this. I certainly have a bundle of purples though.

I like the colours well enough, but my first thought when I opened this was how cool the palette is. I think it would have been a nicer combination if the silver was a warm gold. When I wear these shadows I do switch the silver for a gold from another palette (using it on the inner corners and inner lid) and the result is much better - at least on my colouring (medium skin, brown hair and eyes).

Above I've swatched each colour outdoors, in direct sunlight. The below shot is taken indoors, with flash.

There we are on my eyes below. You can tell that application is a little patchy - and I do find these shadows need some work when it comes to blending.

Verdict

This is not a $35 palette. I'd pay a max of $15 for it, and even then I think you can do much better. Eg the $10 Models Prefer 12-shadow palette I've recently reviewed has much better packaging than this one, comes with a double-ended brush that's surprisingly useful, and the shadows themselves look and feel of similar quality to this, even if they don't last quite as well without a primer.

I've had a hit-and-miss experience with So Susan products, and this is one of the misses unfortunately. While I'll use the palette at least for the lavender colour, I can see it growing pretty dusty, pretty quickly.

On the overall quality of the palette: the shadows look cheap/powdery (and feel a little that way when used) but they apply reasonably well. I like the colours more than I thought I would, but as mentioned, I do think that gold works much better with the other colours than silver does (that's of course just personal preference).

This is obviously meant to be a pigmented palette and it's really not - the colour aren't bad, they're just not 'intense' as claimed. I personally don't mind that because it's easier to make mistakes when you're dealing with super-pigmented products, but if you're after pigment, I'd look elsewhere.

In sum, don't buy this: you can find better pharmacy products for half the price. It's an ok inclusion in a subscription box but it's certainly not something I'd go out and buy. For an extra few dollars you can go to Mecca or Sephora and get something that's much, much better quality and feels a thousand times more special.

Avoid.
