Mellow Auto Twist Eyeliner in Navy - review and swatches

We received this eyeliner in August's Lust Have It (reviewed here). I was happy to see it because I've received four Mellow products from subscription boxes and, so far, I've liked all of them.
Mellow is an affordable brand that hails from New Zealand and I'm always thrilled to find cheap makeup that does a good job. It's a good reminder that you don't have to buy high-end stuff if you want something that performs well.
I've seen a few reviewers online comment that the box for this liner is far too big for the product itself.
While you can see above that this is rather true, it's not something I would have noticed!
You can see that the pencil is very slim and has a tapered tip. This means it's great for getting a really thin line, although of course you can angle it to get a thicker one or smudge it before it dries if you want something softer and wider.
There it is again below. I also love that you can twist it to reveal more product - no sharpening makes a lazy girl happy ; ).
Mellow claims/product details:
- A long lasting, non flaking eyeliner
- Glides on easily and stays sharp
- Natural based formula provides gentle coverage for even the most sensitive eyes
- 100% mineral based, with no parabens, preservatives or chemical dyes
- RRP $7 AUD for 0.21g
I've swatched it above and photographed it in natural light, and below in direct sunlight. I angled the product to get a thicker line so you can see the colour better and also see that you can smudge it before it dries for a softer line.
It's a nice blue, but I'm not sure I would call it navy - it's more of a mid-toned blue colour.
There it is in the shade (and it does look darker and more navy here):
Below I've given it a good wipe with my finger. While it does smudge, it doesn't do as badly as other, more expensive liners do - and I've also found that it doesn't transfer when applied. Huzzah! That's a miracle on my hooded eyes since most eye products transfer in a heartbeat on me.
Below I've applied it to my lower waterline and also placed a very thin line alone my upper lashline. It doesn't adhere amazingly well to my waterline, although I have applied it with a very soft touch. And no transferring or smudging above my eye!
There it is below along my lashline. You can barely see it, which is exactly what I want from an eyeliner: it adds definition to my eye but doesn't give me the 'you're wearing eyeliner look', which is what I prefer when it comes to my eyes since heavy lines don't look great on me.
Verdict
This is a really great product and I'm super impressed with it.
It applies smoothly and delivers a really thin line (without constant sharpening), which makes me happy. Another thing that makes me happy is that - because I'm a bit of a dunce when it comes to eyeliner application - I can get an even line from it with very little effort.
What's most amazing for me is that it lasts well throughout the day on my lashline and doesn't transfer, although that could have something to do with the fact that I've applied it over my eyeshadow so it adheres better because it has something other than skin to cling to.
Having said this, I've used plenty of more expensive liners in the same way and they transfer straight away, so big ticks to this product! Just goes to show that you don't need to spend a lot to get quality makeup.
It doesn't adhere amazingly well to my waterline, but that's a common issue when it comes to pencils because of course the area is wet and I find that shadows and gels tend to adhere better there.
As for lasting power, I've found that it sticks to the lashline for hours with only a little bit of fading throughout the day, although I've seen other other reviewers say that it smudges and fades after only a few hours. It may be that they applied a thicker line than I did so it hit their upper eye area more readily (which is often what causes liners to smudge and transfer).
It doesn't last very well on my waterline, but I can live with that because the product is so good that I don't mind reapplying it there as needed.
Overall this is a fantastic product and I recommend it. I probably won't be keeping it - even though blue liner is apparently in this season - purely because I won't use it that much. It's a lovely colour, but I'm super boring these days and prefer brown liners (or shadows used as liner) because they give me a natural line and you can't really tell I'm wearing them.
A great little product. And cheap! What's not to love?!
Have you used any Mellow products? Let me know what you think of them if so.
