The Ordinary High-Spreadability Fluid Primer - review

I bought this primer at the same time as The Ordinary's other primer (the High Adherence version, reviewed here), and while I didn't like the High Adherence so I've already panned it, I do like this one and I would recommend it.

Not only is it cheap, but it has a smoothing effect and it works better for my skin than the other version. Indeed, it's not just good for the price: I think it's just good. More on that below.

The Ordinary claims/product details:

  • A lightweight, serum-like formula that increases the spreadability of subsequent complexion makeup to help avoid the unnatural and uneven accumulation of pigments, especially around the eyes and on dry skin
  • Ideal for application before concealing, or applying full-coverage foundation for a more natural look
  • Also acts as a light, non-oily surface hydrator for a natural, dewy look
  • RRP $13.90 AUD for 30ml

Verdict

I like this product and I think it does a great job of smoothing out my skin while also blurring the look of texture like open pores, and since it's cheap, I would absolutely recommend trying it because if it doesn't work for you too, then there's no big loss.

It's a clear product that's like a thick serum or gel in texture, and it has no discernible scent. It spreads and applies well, and a little goes a long way so you don't need much each time.

What I like about this product is that it offers a smooth surface for makeup application while also giving the appearance of plugging pores so my facial texture looks less obvious. It also tones down the look of my greasy sunscreen and makes my face look more matte but still with a slight dewy finish that suits my dry skin. Indeed, it's the kind of product that you could wear on its own because it makes the skin look a little better.

One thing I haven't noticed is whether or not the product improves longevity. Do note, though, that I've seen plenty of reviewers say that this does help with wear-time (see eg the reviews on adorebeauty.com.au) - so it could just be that my skin is dry (and therefore tends to hang on to product anyway, so primers often don't make a difference) and also that I've mostly tested this primer during hot weather when my makeup is more likely to shift earlier anyway.

On the claims: yes this is lightweight and serum-like; yes it does help with the spreadability of my tinted moisturisers and foundations, therefore helping to avoid the uneven accumulation of pigments (and yes, especially on dry skin); and no I don't think it's hydrating, but I agree that it's not oily and it also offers a natural, dewy look that isn't too shiny.

Overall I think this is a great little product and I recommend it. It's cheap, it smooths out my skin and reduces the appearance of texture, plus it helps my makeup glide on smoothly over the top.

Definitely worth trying.
