Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream - review

If you read this blog, you may know that most Dermalogica products I've tried just don't agree with my skin. I wish they did because it's an accessible brand that's often available on special and with GWPs from many of the online retailers, but unfortunately that's just how my cookie crumbles and overall it's not a brand that works for me.
However. Over the years I received a few sachets of this moisturiser via Adore Beauty and I started to really like it, so last year I picked up a tube during one of its sales. I don't regret it. It's a great moisturiser and my dry skin loves it. It's one of those rare products that's hydrating enough for day use on me but doesn't weigh my skin down or mess with my makeup. Tick.
One of the things I like about this product is that it's sold in a huge 100ml tube. As you'll know, most moisturisers come in 30ml to 50ml sizes, so this one's extra generous.
Yes it's true that this isn't a super cheap product, but you're getting at least double what you normally would so that's saying something.
Dermalogica claims/product details:
- Medium-weight moisturiser to balance combination/dry skin
- Deep-moisturising lecithin and aloe gel nourish
- Extracts of mallow, cucumber and arnica soothe and hydrate
- Antioxidant grape seed extract plus vitamins c and e help shield skin from environmental assaults
- Fortified with hyaluronic acid and essential oils
- Helps minimise fine dehydration lines and keep skin feeling comfortable
- Soothes and protects skin
- Helps prevent cellular damage caused by free radicals
- Rich emollients shield skin against dehydration and pollution
- Herbal extracts help restore suppleness and tone
- For drier or prematurely ageing skin
- Formulated without artificial fragrances and colours
- RRP $84.50 AUD for 100ml, but do shop around
Worth noting is that Dermalogica is now sold at Mecca, although I wouldn't necessarily buy it there.
As much as I love Mecca, it's more expensive than the online retailers when it comes to all but a few of Dermologica's products (I think mainly the newer ones aren't available yet at reduced prices), so I'd suggest shopping around.
Verdict
This is a good cream. It doesn't perform backflips and it's not an HG product, but it's a great, everyday moisturiser for my dry skin and I'm really enjoying it.
It's a white cream that's rich without being heavy, and it spreads and applies well. It does have a slight scent and to me it smells a little like hairspray, which isn't my favourite scent but I can live with it because it's not overpowering and it doesn't linger.
What I love about this is that it absorbs beautifully and I can immediately feel it hydrating my dry skin whenever I apply it. Doesn't matter how dry my skin feels or how dehydrated it is, this product targets any discomfort without weighing my skin down or feeling too greasy. Yes it does leave a slight residue, but I don't mind that and it's certainly not the worst after-feel I've come across.
The other thing I love about it is that it does smooth my skin so I think the product is named well, and it makes a great base for makeup because it not only smooths my skin but it also plumps up fine lines. The hydration also lasts nicely throughout the day and overnight, making it a good product for those of us with dry skin: there's nothing worse than applying a cream that doesn't hold its own as time passes, so I'm pleased to say this one does.
On the claims: yes it's medium-weight and yes it balances; yes it nourishes, soothes and hydrates; yes it helps minimise fine lines and keeps skin feeling comfortable; and yes I do think it helps restore suppleness and tone. I also agree that it has a protective element and my skin has been happier overall since I started using the product, even though it's cold now and my skin has never liked winter.
So in sum, I really like this product and I definitely recommend it. It's not quite an HG product but gosh it's close and I can definitely see myself repurchasing it. Sure it's not cheap, but this tube will likely last me a year and you can often find it on special, so I don't think it's bad value.
A great, everyday moisturiser.
