Trilogy Ultra Hydrating Face Cream - reviews

I used this cream every night for around two months late last year, and what I found over time was that my skin got rather clogged and I also started breaking out, so I put it aside for a while before bringing it back in again more recently.

These days I don't use it every night because it's very heavy and can be too much for my skin, so what I do instead is use it on those nights when I've used a chemical treatment or peel - and it works well for that because it's so rich, meaning it's a good cream to apply when my skin is sensitised and needs some TLC. More on that below.

Trilogy claims/product details:

  • Thirst-quenching moisture recovery with Rosapene™, manuka honey and lavender
  • Rich but easily absorbed, you'll banish dry skin with this intensely nourishing cream
  • The ultimate in hydration, it's designed to deliver immediate relief and lasting comfort for a soft, smooth complexion
  • Harnesses the benefits of honey, aloe, avocado and coconut oils, as well as the super hydrating powers of rosehip and evening primrose to give the skin an instant and intensive hit of moisture
  • Suitable for all skin types and ideal for extra hydration in the colder months, this rich cream can also be used as a moisture-boosting mask
  • RRP $39.95 AUD for 75ml, but do shop around (I bought mine at half-price)

Do note that I bought up on quite a few Trilogy products early last year because I'd heard a lot of people rave about the brand and I wanted to see how I went with it.

While a couple of the products have worked well for me, most of them haven't and it's safe to say that it's just not my brand. If I had to pick a pharmacy skincare brand, both Antipodes and La Roche-Posay generally work beautifully for my skin - so I would recommend those over Trilogy, although of course everyone's different.

Verdict

I think this is a good cream that definitely lives up to its ultra hydrating name, but I would tread carefully with this because it's so rich that it clogs my pores and causes breakouts - which so rarely happens with my dry skin - so that's something to keep in mind.

It's a thick, white cream that almost has a balm-like texture. While it does spread and apply well, it takes a little more work to rub in because it's so rich, so do be aware of that too.

It has a lavender scent that I don't like - purely because I don't like the smell of lavender - but I'm sure that the fragrance won't bother most people. Do note that the smell is relatively strong, though, so if you don't like scented skincare then this mightn't be for you.

What I find with this product is that it feels very heavy and nourishing on the skin, and not only does it absorb and hydrate, but it also coats the skin and leaves a protective residue too. So if you have oily to normal skin then I would avoid this because it may be too much for you - it's even too heavy for my dry skin if I use it too often.

Now it may be the case that this product is better for me during the cooler months when my skin's drier, although I suspect it will be too heavy for me to use every night even then. Indeed, as mentioned above, when I used this for two months running I broke out a lot and I don't normally have too many pimples because my skin's dry, so I knew this was the culprit (also, it was the only skincare item I'd changed at the time so I knew it was responsible for the breakouts).

What I do now is only use it a couple of times a week after I've done a chemical peel or treatment, and I find that it works well to soothe, nourish and desensitise my skin after I've resurfaced it. So this wasn't a 'lost' purchase for me and I have found some use for it.

On the claims: yes this offers thirst-quenching moisture recovery; yes it's rich but easily absorbed; yes it's intensively nourishing; yes it offers immediate relief and comfort; and yes it softens and smooths my skin.

Overall I think this is a good product that meets its claims, it's just that it's too heavy for me to use daily because it clogs pores. Still, it works very well when my skin needs some extra TLC, and I've just seen that you can use it as a mask too - so I'll certainly try that and let you know how I go.

Good, but not for everyday use.
