Thursday Plantation Brightening Oil - review

I bought this oil on clearance and I've been using it for the last three months as my overnight hydrator. While I think it's been ok for that job, it hasn't done much for me and I wouldn't buy it again.

Indeed, I haven't had a huge amount of luck with Thursday Plantation as a brand, so I probably won't bother exploring more of the range because, well, three strikes and you're out.

Thursday Plantation claims/product details:

  • A facial oil that helps restore an even complexion and protects the skin from the signs of premature ageing
  • Brightens and tones the skin, helps improve the appearance of pigmentation, age and sun spots, and helps reduce the appearance of small wrinkles
  • Contains a blend of antioxidant rich natural oils, including rosehip, avocado, macadamia, lemon and mandarin as well as vitamins C and E
  • RRP $19.95 AUD for 60ml, but do shop around (I bought mine at less than half-price)

Verdict

This is the second oil I've tried from Thursday Plantation (the other was the Nurture Oil, reviewed here) and I haven't been very impressed by either of them (I didn't like the lip balm either), but at least they didn't cost me too much so it's not a huge deal.

It's a thin-ish oil with a mandarin scent and it spreads well, so you don't need too much each time. Do note that it leaves behind a greasy finish, so it mightn't suit those who prefer oils that vanish into the skin without a trace.

I've been applying mine as my overnight hydrator because it's too greasy to wear under makeup during the day, and also because the coating it leaves on my skin makes it a good oil to seal in my other products and keep my skin protected until morning. That's about all it does, though - at least in my case.

I've tried this as my first-applied product after cleansing (both morning and night), and what I've found is that it doesn't absorb into the skin well - instead it sits on top of my face for ages and doesn't feel like it's getting in there and nourishing my dry skin where I need it most. Its inability to absorb properly also means that it's nowhere near as hydrating as I need it to be, so it's not the right oil for my dry skin.

I also feel that it's clogging my pores and I've broken out in little dots all over my chin while I've been using it. Although I can't say for sure that this oil alone has caused that issue, I do have my suspicions and I'm not the first person to have flagged this particular problem (see eg the reviews on beautyheaven's website).

On the claims: no it hasn't restored an even complexion or protected my skin from the signs of ageing; no it hasn't brightened or toned my skin; no it hasn't improved the appearance of pigmentation or age/sun spots; and no it hasn't reduced the appearance of small wrinkles.

Overall I don't think this is a very good product and while it's not awful, it hasn't met any of its claims in my experience and I can't recommend it. It's also not very hydrating, and since hydration is why I buy oils in the first place, I can't give it a good review.

Not for me.
