OGX Hydrate + Defrizz Kukui Oil Shampoo & Conditioner - review
/
0 Comments
If you read this blog, you may know that I fell in love with OGX haircare in 2015 and, until now, I hadn't found a dud product from the brand.
So far my favourite shampoo/conditioner combo from these guys is the brown macadamia versions (reviewed here) and I expected to love these black kukui oil ones just as much because they're aimed at dry, frizzy hair (that's me!) and I love the matching kukui oil leave-in treatment (reviewed here).
But unfortunately these products haven't hit the mark for me and I've given them a 'disappointing products' tag because I was expecting to love them - and now I'm stuck with two full-sized items that don't wash my hair properly. Argh! Looks like I'll be sticking with what I know in future.
OGX claims/product details:
- Humidity is no match for the ancient Hawaiian secret in this exotic formula
- A kukui nut oil-infused blend helps create a shimmery gloss that keeps the frizz out so you can shine on
- Kukui oil helps smooth texture and repel humidity, to help make every day a 'good hair' day
- RRP $17.99 AUD each for 385ml, but do shop around
Sometimes I review shampoo/conditioner combos under separate headings, just in case anyone's interested in either product but not both.
In this case however I've decided to review them together, because my comments for each item generally apply to both.
Verdict
As mentioned above, I don't love these products and I've given them a 'disappointing products' tag because I've come to expect brilliance from OGX and these items really don't work for me. Yes it may be that they work better for others, but if they're designed for hair like mine, then I'd expect them to do a much better job than they do.
Both products are quite thick and have a nice, fresh and sweet scent that I enjoy. In texture they feel similar to the brown macadamia versions - rich and creamy - and I can tell that they're from the same brand.

That's where the similarities end, however. While the macadamia shampoo washes my hair beautifully without being too harsh, this shampoo doesn't wash my hair much at all. I've resorted to doing three washes with this, and even then my hair doesn't feel close to clean.
Also, I sometimes use a pre-wash treatment on my hair - eg at the moment I'm using a hair oil - but I can't do that with these products because the shampoo doesn't wash the oil out. I haven't had this problem before so I know that the shampoo is the issue, rather than the treatment.
The conditioner doesn't do much for me either. While the macadamia one leaves my hair soft and manageable with plenty of shine and all but eradicates frizz, all this one does is leave my hair feeling coated and looking dull, and it doesn't make my hair feel more hydrated - it's as though the conditioner sticks to my hair but never penetrates it and delivers nourishment when I need it most.
So together these products leave my hair feeling dirty, lifeless and heavy, and looking dull and coated to boot. Plus they do nothing for hydration or managing frizz and they reduce the time between washes, so it's safe to say that these aren't the OGX products for me.
Disappointing. I'll be sticking to my HG macadamia versions from now on!
