Paula's Choice Resist Intensive Wrinkle Repair Retinol Serum - review

We received this product in July's Lust Have It (reviewed here).

I'd tested it before when it showed up in another subscription box ages ago, but I didn't remember how I felt about it - which tells me that it was neither very good nor very bad.

This time around I've tried more different serums and also other products containing retinol, so I've got a better idea of how good it is in comparison to those products. While there's nothing hugely wrong with it, it's not one I would buy because it's not a stand-out for me and I have other serums I prefer.

Paula's Choice claims/product details:
  • This silky serum blends retinol and antioxidants to firm skin, smooth wrinkles and soften fine lines so skin of any age looks and acts younger
  • Stabilised retinol stimulates collage production and reduces wrinkles
  • Vitamin C brightens skin, fades browns spots and evens skintone
  • Kelp extract and oat kernel oil soothe and minimise irritation
  • Luxurious texture absorbs easily, leaving skin soft and smooth
  • Anti-ageing
  • For all skin types
  • RRP $52 AUD for 30ml

Verdict

As with the first bottle of this product that I tried, this one really isn't a stand-out for me. It's fine, I just don't notice any real benefit to using it and I'm not sold on the texture.

It's a thick serum that feels quite oily, and I can tell there's silicone in there too - which my skin doesn't love. I've seen lasses with oily skin complain about the texture, so do be aware of that if your skin is on the oily side because you mightn't like using it for the texture alone.

I have dry skin so I don't mind a bit of oil, but I find that this product sits on top of my skin and never quite absorbs (that could be the silicone, too), so it interferes with any moisturiser I put on top because this product acts as a barrier and doesn't let my moisturiser fully absorb.

What's good about it is that it's not drying or irritating, and I've had issues with retinol playing havoc with my skin - so that's a plus. Maybe that's why the product is quite greasy: to combat the potentially drying/irritating effects of retinol.

While it does contain retinol, it doesn't contain enough of it to encourage the benefits that retinol can deliver - at least for my skin. I've noticed no effect on fine lines/wrinkles, nor does it have an impact on pores or uneven skintone.

On the other claims: it does feel soothing and silky, and it does make my skin feel soft - even though it sits on the surface without really sinking in. It's also not irritating, but it doesn't make my skin look younger (other than having a brief plumping and brightening effect after application, an effect that doesn't last).

All in all, there's nothing hugely wrong with this product - it just doesn't do much for my skin. If you're in your 20s and have dry skin, you might really love this product, but it's not for me.

Ok.
