Covergirl Clump Crusher Mascara - review

I've been meaning to review this mascara for ages but have kept forgetting to do so, and I wanted to sneak this post in now because it will soon be time to send it packing (it's been open for a while).

It's one of those products that I've heard so much about that I had to try it, and while I do like it, it's not my favourite budget mascara so I wouldn't buy it again. More on that below.

Covergirl claims/product details:

  • Build volume, not clumps
  • Innovative brush with lash-loading fins to saturate lashes with extra product
  • Fine-toothed comb bristles evenly distribute mascara and define each lash
  • Gives the look of loads of super-volumised, beautifully separated lashes without the clumps
  • The buildability and lengthening of the lashes is a result of the lash-hugging curved brush and straight bristle design, which has been built to fit the shape of the eye, allowing full saturation of each individual eyelash, top or bottom
  • The precisely designed, tight spacing between each of the straight bristles stops the development of clumps of mascara
  • Available in: Black Brown, Very Black, WP Black Brown and WP Very Black
  • RRP $18.95 AUD for 13.1ml, but do shop around

Verdict

I think this mascara is good but it's not my favourite so I wouldn't buy it again. Still, I've been happy enough to use it and I can see why so many people like it.

As you may know, I have huge issues with mascaras and it's rare to find products that work well for me without hassles. If you have hooded eyes like I do, you'll likely know what I mean.

My issues with mascaras are: I need lengthening more than thickening (though both is preferable) and far too many products thicken but do nothing for length; I don't like mascaras that look clumpy and unnatural; I have hooded eyes and invariably wind up with black sh*t on my puffy upper eye area when wands are too fat or poorly designed; and the hooded area can also make it harder to reach the base of my lashes (I think that's hard for everyone, but even harder for those of us with serious puff).

Happily this mascara is pretty good. The brush isn't too fat so it's easy for me to use and I don't make mistakes with it, it gives reasonable length and volume, and it also doesn't smudge or flake throughout the day.

While I agree that it doesn't leave clumps on my lashes, what it doesn't do well is separate them - so I always need to go in with an eyelash comb after I use this and of course that's annoying. I also wish that it lengthened and thickened a little better than it does, and that's why it's not my favourite mascara (I prefer Maybelline's Lash Sensational, reviewed here).

All in all, I think this mascara is ok but it's not my favourite so I wouldn't buy it again. Indeed, I'm looking forward to moving on to something else, because I have a lot of travel-sized mascaras in back-up at the moment and I really need to get through some.

Fine but not perfect.
