Chella Ivory Lace Highlighter Pencil and Chella 'Light Brown' Luscious Eyebrow Colour Pencil - review

I mentioned yesterday that I'm going through my draft posts because I've wound up with so many of them that I'm starting to feel overwhelmed!

That's why this post contains my old indoor photos, rather than the new outdoors ones. I haven't re-shot these because the photos are fine and the swatches true to colour, and in any event the sun's hiding today so I don't think I'll be taking any new photos outside.

We received these two products from Violet Box, and I've found them both useful and was glad to receive them. It's nice to get products from boxes that you'll actually use and get through (they're both almost finished now), because it makes you feel like you're getting something from your subscriptions (at least, it does for me).

Anyhoo, let's have a look at the products.

What I love about the eyebrow pencil is that it's very thin, so you can really make a nice line (and smudge it if necessary with a brush or your finger) - plus you don't need to sharpen it, which is a major plus for me. Yep, I'm lazy. We established that long ago ; )

As for the highlighter pencil, you do need to sharpen it and it's also worth catching the product that comes out on the surface of your sharpener when you do it, because otherwise you're losing quite a lot of product.

Chella claims/product details

Highlighter pencil:
  • This fresh and pretty neutral pencil will brighten and visibly lift your eyes when lightly applied on the browbone, dark circles, blemishes and red spots
  • This multi-purpose pencil can also be used to brighten and 'open' the eye area by applying to the waterline and inner corners of the eye
  • Applying a thin, blended line down the centre of the nose creates the illusion of a thinner nose
  • Perfect for highlighting a beautiful smile by eliminating dark shadows and preventing lipstick spread by applying to the Cupid’s bow and along the lip line
  • So many uses in just one pencil!
  • RRP $22 for 1.4g

Eyebrow pencil:

  • The fine tip on this sleek European-designed mechanical pencil has a creamy consistency that glides into place

Verdict - highlighter pencil

While I liked this pencil and found it useful, I wouldn't purchase it.

It's a handy product to travel with because it does perform a number of different functions (although you would need to bring your fat sharpener along with it); however it doesn't perform any of those functions particularly well.

I'm not saying it performs badly - it's just not the best product of its kind that I've used. My issue with it was that it's too sheer to perform much of a concealing function, and if I used it to cover dark circles, red marks and blemishes (including those red marks on my chest), it was almost ready for another sharpen after one day of use.

It may perform better for lasses with paler skin than mine. It's probably a better product for those with less things to cover up too ; )

Having said this, I enjoyed using the product and am glad to have trialled it.

Verdict - eyebrow pencil

This is the best eyebrow pencil I've used. Mind you, I've only ever used three of them ; )

This one is the best because it allows a thin, smudge-able line that doesn't need re-touching throughout the day. Plus you don't need to sharpen it. What's not to love about that?!

I guess my issue with it is with the price. If used daily, I think you'd get through this in around two months (maybe three, depending on how much you needed to use each time). I certainly wouldn't pay $20 for an eyebrow pencil - you can get products that perform just as well for much less.

I'd be more likely to fork out a little more for eg an eyeliner, since there can be huge differences between good and bad ones. But for a brow pencil? It's pretty hard to stuff one of those up, and who's going to know that it only cost you a few dollars? On top of that, you're not going to be using it close enough to your eye to worry about any irritation that might come from using eg a cheap eyeliner.

So yes, while I love this, I wouldn't buy it. It's one of those items I'm super glad I received in a subscription box though!

Have you used any Chella products? If so, what did you think?
