Dewytree Mineral Healthy Sun Cut Loose Powder SPF27 PA++ - review

I seem to have an inordinate number of posts sitting in my drafts, mainly containing photos and a few dot points, so I've decided to go through those and finalise at least some of them - otherwise I'll wind up with more drafts than actual posts soon enough (!).

This is one of those drafts, and that's why the photos here are my old indoor ones, rather than the outdoor ones I started taking more recently. Although I'll be re-shooting coloured products in my drafts going forward (to give the most accurate idea of colour that I can), this product doesn't require outdoor photos because it's an almost-translucent finishing powder and doesn't lend itself well to swatching (so you don't need a colour guide for it).

Anyhoo. I received this Dewytree finishing powder in Memebox Special #31 Earth & Sea Cosmetics (see my review here) and, while I didn't need it (I have a few unopened finishing powders in my back-up collection), it's the only one with such a high SPF - indeed, I don't think any of the others contain sunscreen at all. So it got moved up the queue now that the sun's out, and I've been using it since mid-September.

As you can see, it's a nice and compact little product that's great to leave in your handbag (which is where I've been keeping it) to apply throughout the day when you need to combat shine. I've mentioned before that I generally steer clear of powder products because most don't work well on my dry skin and can settle in wrinkles/make me look older, but since I've been using heavier sunscreens as the weather heats up, I've needed something like this to balance the grease factor.

Dewytree claims/product details:
  • Enriched with natural minerals and essential oils for maintaining your skin's moisture levels
  • Leaves a long-lasting silky finish to your makeup
  • High SPF
  • Uses an air pocket puff that does not clog the pores with powder application
  • Comes with an in-built mirror and two puffs
  • Cap unscrews in case you'd prefer to use a brush
  • RRP $34US for 10g

Verdict

I really like this product and I'd say it lives up to its claims. While I obviously can't confirm the sun protection factor, I can say that it smells faintly of sunscreen. I can also confirm that it leaves a nice silky finish to your makeup. I did try photographing this but you couldn't see a real difference (that's a good thing!), so I haven't included those photos.

As mentioned, it's a nicely compact and handy product that travels well and gets the job done. While I don't normally like sponge or puff applicators (they don't seem to work too well and you often lose a good deal of product in the application process), this is an exception - but do note that it doesn't always apply evenly and quite a bit of product puffs out into the air when used, so it takes a bit of practice. You may well prefer to use a brush instead. I'd be using a brush if I were applying it at home, but it's nice to leave a brush out of my purse kit and just use the applicator.

Although it does have a high SPF, I wouldn't rely on this as your only sun protection because you apply such a fine layer (although I'm no expert on these things).

What I love most about it is that it's super super fine - honestly, it's the finest powder I've ever used. It's so fine that, when you unscrew the cap, powder floats into the air like smoke from a cigarette (it's actually kind of cool to watch). The same thing happens if you dab your face too hard with the puff applicator (something I'm guilty of - repeatedly).

While it's a cream/ivory colour in the container, when applied it's translucent and does nothing other than combat shine. Fortunately it's so finely milled that it doesn't sit in my wrinkles or make me look older, so yaysers to that. Plus it's hard to imagine it would ever look cakey - unless you went bananas with application.

Ticks from me. I'd definitely consider purchasing this in future and I'd recommend it for other lasses who have dry skin and need something like this that isn't going to make their skin look drier.
