Emite Makeup BB Highlighting Pen in Coco - review

We received this product in February's Violet Box. Initially I was pretty excited about it because it looks fancy and I liked the Emite eye pencil we received in an earlier box (see review here), plus it's the right colour for me so that's a win.

After mucking round with it for a few weeks (and I'm currently covered in it haha), unfortunately I don't think it's an amazing product - not for my skin anyway - but I'll definitely use it so that's something at least.

Emite claims/product details:
  • A spot concealer and highlighter
  • Creamy and adherent
  • Contains a special combination of powders that give an ultra-light and smooth feel
  • Melts on contact with the skin, making it easy to apply
  • The shade is soft and neutral, so it suits most skintones
  • A practical and effective way to minimise imperfections without weighing down the skin
  • Swiftly and easily raise and lighten the area round the eyes; also apply the pencil to the cheekbones, under the eyebrows and along the bridge of the nose - this immediately gives an alert and fresh look
  • RRP $32 for 3.3ml

See above swatch (natural light). You can see that it's indeed creamy and has a good, neutral colour (not yellow or pink).

The below photo is taken in direct sunlight. I left it to dry and then gave it a soft wipe with my finger - you can see it's not adherent and shifts easily.

The below is taken indoors with flash:

Below I've blended it in. It does have a slight highlighting/concealing effect, but it also sits in lines (you can see that to the right of the swatch).

There's me without the product:

Below I've used it on the inner corner of my eye and also as a concealer. You can see it gives a bit of a grainy effect because it sits on ridges/in lines etc.

Verdict

First, I'm not sure why this product has 'BB' in the title - maybe the company's just using a grab word because everything's BB these days?!

Second, VB described this as a concealer on the product card that came with the box, but Emite describes it as a highlighting pen on its website (which would make sense, given the product's title) and gives a variety of uses for it that don't include concealing, so I'm not sure what's going on there. I've included both descriptions/uses in the bullet points above.

Third, the product doesn't perform either function particularly well - at least for me. While I like it in theory, it's not a product I can use everywhere because it sits in pores and therefore leaves visible dots on my face where I've applied it.

It also clings to ridges/fine lines so I can't use it under my eyes. Plus it has a tendency to slip around so you need to set it with a powder, so it's not particularly long lasting - with or without a setting powder.

I have a feeling it might work better on skin that's much better than mine (younger, no lines/dry patches and no open pores), so if you're blessed with good (and young!) skin, don't discount this. It does highlight reasonably well and can conceal imperfections a little - but not if eg your under-eye circles are too dark.

Despite the issues mentioned above, there are spots I can apply it on my face where I don't have open pores etc, so at least it will get used. I may even move it to my Project Pan list, just to get through it and so my dedicated concealer can be used a bit less and therefore last longer.

Ok.
