Benefit They're Real Push Up Liner - review

We received this sample eyeliner in Marie Claire's Spring Edit of The Parcel. I wasn't particularly glad to see it because I don't use black eyeliners anymore - and especially not ones that deliver harsh lines, as this one does - but there was plenty of hype surrounding the product so in a way I was glad to give it a go.
I've been trialling it for almost a month now, and finally feel able to write a review. I wouldn't normally take that long to feel comfortable with a product, but this isn't one that you can apply straight away without drama (at least, it wasn't for me).
So do be warned: if you're not great with precision products that you need to practise applying, then this mightn't be for you. It's certainly not for me, although I'm happy to say that I've tried it.
Benefit claims/product details:
- The first-ever lash-hugging gel liner in a pen
- Matte black gel formula won’t smudge, budge or dry out
- The innovative soft AccuFlex™ tip hugs your lashline from corner to corner: the closer the line, the bigger the eye!
- The angled AccuFlex™ tip works both ways
- Lasts 24-hours
- Waterproof
- How to apply: twist base until gel appears on tip; wipe off excess before each use to get fresh liner every time; rest the tip on the base of your lashes and guide along your lashline from either the inner or outer corner
- RRP $24USD for 1.4g
Above was the first ever swipe I did of the product: you can see that I squeezed out way too much (and this is easy to do). I squeezed out so much that the first chunk didn't dry (see below where I've wiped it), but the rest dried fast enough - so it will stay put.
Below was my first ever crack at application. You can see how rubbish it looks: uneven and all over the place. Indeed, it took me far too many goes to achieve a line I was happy with.
One thing I learned to do with this product was apply it before shadow, so I could put shadow over the top and cover my wonky, patchy line - see below.
The below photo was taken yesterday: it took me that long (almost a month) to get the product as close to right as I'll likely ever get (although granted, I haven't been using it every day).
Verdict
I personally don't think that any product should take this long to get comfortable with - I don't care how good it is (and I really don't think it's that great).
I've done some online searches and so many people have struggled with using this, so it's not just me (!).
Benefit called this a game changer, the result of five years' development. With that many years in the making, you'd think they might have found a way to make application easier for the average person (as in, non-makeup artists).
Imabeautygeek.com has come up with a list of tips to help make application easier. I reckon you have to worry if one product needs 50 'normal' people and one expert to practise with it and come up with a bunch of tips. You also have to worry about something that encourages product waste - as this does because you're meant to wipe off the top each time you use it.
What I found is that it dries quickly and you can wind up with little black bits that fall off or stick along the lashline. This doesn't help when it comes to getting an even line because the tip runs over them and makes things wonky and patchy. This also means it's even more difficult than it is with a regular liner to get both eyes even and looking the same.
One good thing about it is that it does stay put, but then, most gels do. I personally find the right kind of brush much easier to use than this, although maybe that's just because it's what I'm used to.
I've seen it said that even masters of applying liner had to practise with this one, so expect a learning curve - even if you're used to eyelining with gels and pencils. If you're not and you're not willing to spend a while with the product, then I'd say it's not for you.
In short, this product is all too hard for me. Even though I've got the hang of it now (mostly), I'm still not consistent with it and am liable to bugger it up when I'm in a rush, which is often.
Not for me. But don't discount it if you're a gel liner fan and want something that can hug the lashline with practice.
