Maru Shih Japanese Cafe, Toorak - review

You may remember that Mex and I have been searching high and low for 'our' Japanese restaurant for ages.
We're both huge Japanese fans and, when we were living in Berlin, we found this sensational restaurant called Mikoto that catered to both our Japanese needs: I prefer traditional fare (the simple, fresh stuff) and he prefers the more complex, fusion style - although he'll certainly settle for the traditional stuff if it's amazeballs.
I found Maru Shih online and it had some great reviews, so we thought we'd give it a crack. Fortunately our first visit was ok and it's definitely a place we'll go back to.
Having said this, we're not sure yet that we've found our local Japanese joint. While Maru Shih was good, the wow factor just wasn't there - at least on this occasion.
I really love the layout and decor in this place. It's minimalist and classy - your typical Japanese. It's a nice place to be.
I've always loved Japanese presentation when it comes to food, and Maru Shih doesn't disappoint. Every dish came out looking as though it had been thoughtfully and carefully prepared.
This is the Takoyaki: balls of octopus and vegetables served with special Japanese sauce (8 pieces for $6).
This dish was the big let-down for us unfortunately and was the main reason why Maru Shih didn't quite nail the meal.
The dish was basically just deep fried something covered in cheap mayo and the taste wasn't good. We definitely wouldn't order it again. It was so bad that - very unlike us - we didn't finish it and we also didn't take away the left overs. I don't think that's ever happened before!
This was what I ordered: the Terriyaki Salmon Bento ($17), which included rice, salad, soya beans and miso soup (below).
Everything was good, I just don't think it was quite worth the $17 charged for it - the piece of salmon was rather small. Also, the salmon was overcooked so if I order this again, I'll ask for it to be cooked medium-rare.
This little miso was actually very good. I reckon it's hard for miso to stand out, but this one did. I can't really explain why - but you can certainly tell even from looking at it that there's more going on with it than many miso soups. It was richer I think, without being too salty.
Here's what Mex ordered and this dish may be the thing that draws us back. It's so not something I would order (doesn't look particularly simple and healthy haha) but he really liked it.
It's the Teppanyaki Dinner Plate ($15), which is basically deep fried fish with egg. If you're after something heavy that will keep you going for a while, this will definitely do that!
In sum
Maru Shih wasn't amazing, but it was good enough to warrant a second visit so we can make a decision on whether we plan to keep going back.
The restaurant itself is a great place to sit and the service was good, and the food needs more exploring (just stay away from those octopus balls hehe).
If you live around the area and know of decent Japanese, do let me know!
