theBalm Time Balm Primer - review

Only recently did I discover just how many primers I have sitting there waiting to be used. Two from Bodyography, one from Benefit, an Inika one from Lust Have It, MAC's Strobe Cream and a similar product from Memebox. And I'd thought that primers were something I hadn't become overloaded with! Granted, two of them are travel sizes, but still...

This one from theBalm had been in the queue for almost a year, and while it's only been open for a few months, it was time to move it up the list. I've occasionally been alternating it with the travel sized Bodyography product I've been using for Project Pan, since I really do find it hard to use the same products every day and have needed to reach for something else.

theBalm is quickly becoming one of my favourite brands - I'm yet to use a dud product from them. Plus the products aren't the most expensive on the market and you can often find them in Australia for prices comparable to the US ones. If I didn't have so much stuff, I'd be looking to explore the brand some more. The Instain range of blushes in particular is something I've got my eye on for when I've finished off a couple of blushes from my stash and want to replace them.

My golly, am I still rambling? Let's review this thing!

theBalm claims/product details:
  • Contains vitamins A, C & E
  • Designed to be worn alone for visibly softer skin, or under makeup so your look stays put
  • Helps even out skintone
  • Minimises the appearance of fine lines and pores
  • RRP $34.95 for 30ml, but do shop around - you can often find it cheaper from one of the online retailers

Verdict

This is a nice little primer, and one that I think is good value for money because I found it for something like $25 and the tube will last for ages.

It's one of those thick, velvety, silicone-based primers (like Benefit's The POREfessional), only I reckon this one's much better than its Benefit counterpart. Plus it's cheaper!

It's quite a thick product but it smooths out nicely and it's a pleasure to use. It does help makeup go on better and it's mattifying so I suspect it does something towards oil control, although my skin is dry so I can't really comment on that aspect.

As for the other claims, I think it does help reduce the appearance of fine lines and pores etc, in large part because it has a slight blurring effect. I also think it does help makeup last at least a little longer when worn underneath it, plus you can use it over makeup to set things in place of powder.

As you may have seen, I've moved theBalm Shelter Tinted Moisturiser on to my Project Pan list, so this product may well join it once the Bodyography primer is done, since I do like using products from the same brand together if I can - often they work better in concert, particularly when it comes to base products.

In sum, this is a great little product and I'm looking forward to mucking around with it some more!
