Hikari Eyeshadow Quad in Zoe - review and swatches

We received a Hikari Eyeshadow Quad in our July Lust Have It box (reviewed here).

You could have received various different quads and I was unfortunate enough to receive this one in Zoe.

I say 'unfortunate' because, in the words of my husband, 'Christ. That's hideous.'

I'd have to agree with him on that one because this particular quad is one I would never wear and I can only think of one or two people I know who might be able to pull it off.

There it is:

Colour selections all come down to personal preference of course but I suspect a lot of people would have a similar reaction to this particular quad.

I'm obviously a little disappointed with this one - I would much have preferred the quad in Emma, for example, which is light-years more wearable than this one - but it's all the luck of the draw.

The colours in Zoe are described as 'violet' (that'd be the radioactive purple), 'haze' (I guess that's the molten bronze that I (rightly) suspected would be a nightmare in terms of fall-out), 'champagne' (that's not champagne - sorry - it looks more like fake and dirty buried treasure) and 'coal'.

They all look powdery/chalky to me in the pans, but at least they don't feel that way to the touch - if anything they're quite smooth and creamy and have a good texture - but that's where the pros to this quad end for me.

There's a light swatch, photo taken in natural light:

Now for the sting in the tail.

Look how badly this applies (particularly the charcoal), and note the glitter fall-out from the haze colour at the edge:

So bad. Looks like I'm bruising:

One more. You can see the fall-out/glitter-transfer issue here too (see my under-eye and crease areas especially):

Verdict

I'll comment on the colour of this quad very briefly because colour is so personal and what works for one doesn't work for all. Obviously I don't like the quad and the colours aren't ones I'll wear. Others might however love this and I suppose what's good about it is that it's different and the purple shade in particular isn't one I've seen before.

Colour aside, I don't think this is a good formula overall and the shadows are inconsistent. The champagne and violet colours aren't too bad. They apply well enough and last well throughout the day, but I suggest using them with a primer.

The haze colour isn't great because the fall-out from that isn't something I can live with, but I guess you'd expect this from glittered shades so it's not unusual. Having said this, the fall-out is just as bad whether with or without a primer, and I'd expect it to adhere at least a little better with a primer but it doesn't.

The coal shade is the worst of the bunch - it applies patchily and I just can't get an even application from it, no matter what I do. Perhaps it's not meant to be a crease colour, but I wanted to use it that way because it's the most matte of the bunch and I need that in my crease because I have hooded eyes. If you wanted to use it as a liner, it might be fine for that but I haven't tried it this way because I wasn't sure about putting these shadows too close to my sensitive eyes (I felt they might be irritating).

All shadows feel quite nice to the touch and they're definitely pigmented, but that's where the good things end for me.

I also think the packaging looks/feels cheap and flimsy, plus it's far too bulky for what you get so it's not great for travel.

I've had a look online and seen a couple of people rave about these shadows, although they were using different quads or eyeshadow singles so perhaps it's just this particular quad that isn't as user-friendly as some of the others.

Obviously I don't like this product and I'll be passing it on to someone who can rock colours as bold as these.

Colour aside, my main issue is that two of the shades are hard to work with, and life's too short to be spending heaps of time getting your eyeshadow to apply well and stay where you want it to.
