Sportsgirl Pout About It! Lip Colour in Beauty Queen - review and swatches

If you read this blog, you'll know that I can't get enough of Sportsgirl lipsticks - and indeed I own about six of them now.
What I love about them is that they're cheap and decent quality, and aside from the packaging I think they hold their own (and then some) against more expensive products.
They come in both cream and matte formulas, and while the mattes are better because they last well and aren't drying, the cream ones are good if you don't mind reapplying them throughout the day.
These lipsticks cost $9.95 each and they come in a broad range of colours, so you're likely to find something that suits you.
Also, while there are some permanent shades (and I understand 'Beauty Queen' is one of those), there are also seasonal releases so you can find the latest colours without having to pay heaps for something you mightn't wear that often.
Sportsgirl claims/product details:
- Vibrant lipstick colour that moisturises and protects
- Not tested on animals
- 'Beauty Queen' is a light pink shade in the cream formula
- RRP $9.95 for 4g
Above I've photographed the lipstick bullet in natural light and below in direct sunlight.
I wouldn't normally go for a colour like this, but I found it for $4.95 and thought why not since it's so creamy and sheer that it doubles as a gloss. This means I can either wear it on its own and build it up for more intensity, or I can wear it over more vibrant products to tone those down if I want to.
There's a swatch in the shade (heavier swatch below and lighter one above):

Verdict
This is a great little product and a bargain for $4.95. Even at full price it's good value because the quality is there.
I have four matte Sportsgirl lipsticks and two cream ones, and while I prefer the mattes because they outperform more expensive products when considering lasting power and how non-drying the formula is, these cream ones are good too.
'Beauty Queen' is a coolish light pink and it's not the kind of shade that would normally suit me, but somehow this one looks ok. Often paler colours (and especially pinks) can look chalky on me and wash me out, but this is one of the few that doesn't so they've really nailed the colour and I reckon it would work on a variety of skintones.
It's creamy and hydrating, and it's sheer enough that I can use it over a brighter colour to tone it down, without covering the colour underneath too much. It's also buildable, so you can layer it on for extra colour if you wish.
The only downside is that this particular shade doesn't last well on the lips. I wouldn't expect it to since it is creamy, but I also have the shade 'Birthday Suit' and for some reason that one hangs around a little longer on the lips than this one does.
Sportsgirl lipsticks don't have a strong scent, so you should be ok with them if you don't like fragranced products. I also like that they're cruelty free: I've recently become more interested in buying cruelty free, so I'm happy that these aren't tested on animals.
In sum, I really love these lipsticks and can't recommend them enough. If you want to buy a few seasonal shades but don't want to pay a lot for them, I urge you to head into Sportsgirl and check out the range.
Love.
