Hobba, Prahran - review

Mex and I discovered Hobba late last year and it was a happy, local discovery. It's one of the newer kids on the local scene and already it seems to be booming. Part of the attraction - at least for us - is the building itself. The warehouse-style layout is modern, fresh and appealing: a great place to sit back and relax.
I've included a few shots here of the indoors so you can see what I mean. The first couple of times we went (on a Sunday), it was so busy that we had to wait for a table. Fortunately we didn't have to wait long and the place seems to have a good system going, along with attentive but relaxed service.
The menu changes frequently based on seasonal ingredients, so the dishes you see below won't necessarily be available if and when you go. But at least you can see what kinds of foods they offer and how good everything looks!
This was a nicely sized green juice. Something of a bucket really ; ) I do like the way many places serve juices these days - in these large glass jars.
These were the breakfast pancakes that Dad ordered when he came along with us one time. He'd had his eye on something else but the table next to us ordered these and, when he saw them come out, he changed his mind and ordered them too.
He said they were great - filling and well done. The pancakes were nicely fluffy and the dish was simple without being boring.
This was what I ordered on the first time we went. It was on the lunch menu: a roast vegetable salad with goats cheese. From memory it cost about $18.
It was sensational - the veggies were cooked to perfection (not too soft) and the pine nuts and goats cheese added interest. My only gripe with it was the amount of oil used for dressing: it really didn't need that much. If it appears on the menu again I would definitely order it, but I'd ask for them to go easy on the oil.
Mex ordered this one: beans with chorizo, feta and a scotch egg. He loved it and was pretty upset when it wasn't on the menu the next time we went hehe. He likes his food rich and hearty and this definitely achieved that. He's also pretty hard to please when it comes to breakfast, but this dish hit the mark.
When Mex and I went back on our own on another occasion, we both built our own dishes from different menu items that we adapted. His is above (your standard breakfast fare) and mine below (avocado with feta and mushrooms).
Interestingly, we both agreed that these dishes didn't quite nail it. I'm not sure why, but the meals weren't the stand-outs we expected from Hobba. When it comes to 'simple/standard' breakfast fare, I reckon it's pretty hard for a joint to do the meals really well, but it's also hard to stuff them up. In this instance the meals were fine but nothing special. They could have been done with a little more oomph, and they weren't as good value as the other dishes we'd ordered previously.
In sum
Hobba is definitely worth a look in and I'm glad it's popped up around the corner. The place is worth visiting for the layout and atmosphere alone. The service is decent and it's my kind of service: attentive but not in your face.
The food is great and the ingredients fresh, plus the menu is interesting and there's something for everyone.
Check out the menu here. Breakfast goes until 3pm and lunch starts at 11.30am. There's also a kids menu and an interesting bunch of sandwiches and sides.
I think we might have to go back to Hobba this weekend. It's been a while and I've missed it!
