Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Creme Lipstick in Grace - review and swatches

Hourglass is a brand I fell for last year - hard - when I bit the bullet and picked up the unbelievably amazing Ambient Lighting Palette. That palette is probably the single most expensive makeup item I own (aside from the Ambient Lighting Blush Palette, which Santa bought for me later on), but it's by far my favourite so it was totally worth the $76 outlay.
I bought it just before going on my year-long spending ban as something of a last hurrah before closing my purse strings with sad determination. Gosh, and wasn't that going out with a bang ; )
Anyhoo. Santa was nice enough to allow me to buy the Ambient Lighting Blush Palette online when it was first released at Mecca in November last year (I was worried it would sell out if I waited) and then he put the palette away for Christmas Day.
I was however allowed to keep the free samples and Hourglass gift with purchase (this lipstick) that came with the order, and I finally cracked the lipstick open last a couple of weeks ago after giving birth to my little girl. My body was feeling like something of a war zone after childbirth and this special little lipstick was on-hand to make me feel marginally better.

Grace is described as a 'pink nude' but I reckon it leans more peach and caramel. See above and below photos.
You can tell how creamy it is. You can also tell from the lip shot below how hydrating it is - it really fills in lines and plumps my lips nicely.
Verdict
First, the formula. This is a super moisturising and creamy lipstick that feels amazeballs on - like you're doing something good for your lips just by wearing it. There's something caramelly about the formula too: it feels rich and luxurious and you can tell it's a high-end product.
The colour: Grace is a lovely, everyday colour that would suit most people. I probably wouldn't have chosen it for myself because it pulls a little brown on me, but I do like it and I will wear it. Note that it's a pretty sheer colour so you do need to apply quite a bit if you want it to show up well. If you're after a natural, glossy-looking lip that works well with a dramatic eye (or for a barely there makeup look), this colour is a good choice.
As for longevity, this isn't the most long-lasting lipstick I own but I wouldn't expect that from a formula that's this creamy - it does transfer on your coffee mug, so don't expect a super-long wear from it. Having said this, it certainly lasts better than any other creamy lipstick I own, so I think Hourglass has managed to do the best they could with a hydrating formula like this one.
I love that it's free of nasties and that Hourglass doesn't test on animals. I probably wouldn't go out and buy a full size of these lipsticks because I do have so many and my HG Shanghai Suzy lipsticks cost only $12.95 and run rings around most products in terms of lasting power, but Hourglass' lipsticks are definitely superior in formula in terms of how they look and feel on the lips. Plus they come in a beautiful range of colours.
Divine.
