Mellow Cosmetics Blush in Pink - review
/
0 Comments
We received this blush in our January 2015 Violet Boxes.
You could have received a peach or bronze version (both of which would have suited me) or this pink one, which of course is the only colour I didn't want and won't use much, if at all.
Ach. Still, I liked this product enough to source the bronze version, swapping it via the FB Violet Box Swap group (thank god for swap groups!).
Fortunately it's not the worst pink I've wound up with and the colour looks better on than off. While I'm unlikely to use it on its own, it doesn't look too terrible on me and I might use it underneath eg a bronze illuminator for a bit of added oomph. I could also wear it under one of my orange blushes for some coral action.
Happily it's a matte product, which I much prefer - you can always add shimmer if you want to, and many shimmer products tend to accentuate pores so I generally steer clear of all but the most amazing ones.
See wrist swatch below and note how sheer it is, which I like because you can build it and you're less likely to over-apply it. As I've said before, I often prefer sheerer products because I find them easier to work with and you're more likely to get an even application.
Mellow Cosmetics claims/product details:

- Soft sheer blush powder
- Blends easily into the skin for a silky finish
- Free from parabens

About Mellow
Mellow wasn't a brand I'd heard of before Violet Box so I've looked into it a bit.
Mellow aims to produce high quality cosmetics at affordable prices. Its products are designed and tested in New Zealand, and they're cruelty free. Products are also made with the goodness of natural minerals and they are all paraben free.
See Mellow's website for more info.
The above photo is taken in direct sunlight, and the below is outside in natural light. I've applied it lightly because that's how I would wear it, and you can see that it gives a nice, sheer wash of colour.
Even though there's not a massive amount of colour happening in these photos, the colour is still the result of quite a few layers of product: it's definitely not a pigmented blush, but it's one you can build if that's the look you're after.
Verdict
Let's leave the colour aside - other than to say again that while pink and I don't mix, it's a better pink than I'd expected - and just look at the product itself.
In short, I reckon it's a pretty decent little blush for the price. It's nicely matte with a good texture and it applies and blends well. As mentioned, it's sheer but buildable so you can achieve the amount of colour you want, without the risk of overdoing it that you often find with super pigmented products.
You could also use this as an eyeshadow if you wanted to, which may well be what I'll do with it most because I can get away with this kind of colour more on my eyes, as opposed to my lips/cheeks.
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this because I haven't had a massive amount of luck with cheaper blushes (unlike eg cheaper foundations), and while I mightn't use the bejesus out of this particular colour, I'll definitely use the bronze version a lot. Mental note to review that one soon!
Glad to have tried this one : )
