Little Bird Organic Paw Paw Balm, Pink Grapefruit - review

This little paw paw balm showed up in my stocking at Christmas. While paw paw has really been done to death and I've seen enough of it for the moment, I had noticed this one in Coles (the packaging caught my eye) so I was happy enough to try it.

As you may know, I tend not to use paw paw on my lips but instead use it on dry parts of my body (eg feet and elbows), although I've given this a try on my lips too in order to review it properly.

Little Bird claims/product details:
  • Soothes and softens lips
  • Repairs appearance, seals in moisture and provides protection from external exposure
  • Can also be used for dry and irritated skin
  • Original balm (fragrance free) contains 85mg/g organic paw paw extract; tangerine and pink grapefruit versions contain 50mg/g paw paw extract
  • Petrochemical free and no added preservatives
  • Handy lip applicator
  • RRP $4.99 for 15g, but do shop around

Verdict

In the last few years, paw paw balm has become a staple for many - I reckon it all started with Lucas' Pawpaw Ointment and people went bananas for it after that. While it's certainly not a staple in my armoury (I prefer lip balm/gloss for lips and oils for dry skin), I've used quite a bit of it because it keeps turning up in subscription boxes in various forms.

While I'm not a committed paw paw user, I did like this little balm - more than the Lucas version, the texture of which I find a bit yuck. This one feels more balm-like and less snotty/jelly-like, which is my issue with the Lucas version.

As a lip treatment, it definitely has a soothing and protective action (so yes, it lives up to its claims). It also works well as a treatment for dry and irritated skin, and my feet are thanking me for it.

One thing I like about this product is that, unlike many of its competitors, it's petrochemical free and contains no added preservatives. This is good news if you're using this on your lips because you're bound to be swallowing some by accident. It's also good news if you're hoping to use it on babies and small children.

I've heard that some people use balms like this on eg their cheekbones to add a glossy, dewy sheen. While I haven't done that (my makeup is dewy enough because that's my preferred finish), I can see that this would work for that purpose.

Ticks from me. This is probably the first paw paw balm I've come across that I'd consider purchasing.
