Real Chemistry Luminous 3 Minute Peel - review

We received this good-looking sample in our January 2015 Violet Boxes.

I wouldn't normally do a full review of a sample (this one's 5ml) but I felt the size of the product gave me a good-enough idea of it to be able to write the review, plus there's not a lot of reviews online about this currently so I thought it might be useful for anyone thinking of purchasing this.

Real Chemistry claims/product details:
  • A protein peel that leaves the skin soft after just one use
  • Uncover a new layer of fresh, glowing skin
  • Acid-free peel gently sloughs away dead skin cells, evening tone and smoothing rough patches without irritating sensitive skin
  • To use: once a week, apply a thin layer of product to clean, dry skin on face, neck, and décolletage; massage skin in a gentle, circular motion to exfoliate; wash skin with a mild cleanser to completely remove the peel
  • RRP $67 for 50ml

About Real Chemistry's peel

I thought I'd include a bit of info on this product, which I've taken from the Real Chemistry website (follow the link for more information).

In short, the idea behind this product is that traditional exfoliating methods (eg scrubs and acid peels/lasers) are too harsh and can cause irritation and inflammation. They're 'blunt instruments'.

Protein peels are different. They're engineered to bind with dead cells and nothing else, removing those alone and not penetrating too deeply, like other exfoliants can. They aim to leave the skin soft and supple without irritating it.

Sounds good in theory...

Verdict

This looks and sounds amazing, but unfortunately I didn't think much of it at all.

I've tried a few peels like this one from Memebox - I'm talking about peels that form solids on your skin that you then rub around for a while - and I haven't liked any of them. As mentioned in reviews of those products, I don't feel that there's any exfoliating/peeling/resurfacing action: all I'm doing is rubbing dry bits of product over my face and I'm not believing that any dead skin is being removed or that any kind of exfoliation is happening.

After using this, my skin looks and feels no different - the only difference is the normal one you'd expect after washing your face and massaging it for a few minutes. It doesn't feel cleaner or softer, and there's no change to my skintone or any rough patches. And I certainly don't have glowing skin afterwards.

I'd be interested to hear what others think of this product. As I've mentioned before, I tend to prefer rougher, scrubby exfoliants, so it may be that my skin is used to those and something like this is never going to feel the way it should.

I wouldn't buy it, and certainly not for the price! If you've tried this, I'd love to hear your thoughts - I'm happy to be overruled on whether it works : )

I reckon it doesn't. Not on my skin, anyway.
