Mememe Eye Inspire Baked Eyeshadow Quad in Ocean Eyes - review and swatches

I bought a bundle of Mememe products around this time last year, and this little quad was one of them. When it comes to eyeshadows and liners, I love green - particularly anything in the emerald or teal range - and this quad looked bang on the money.

Unfortunately it hasn't been my best Mememe purchase, and it's probably the only item I bought that I don't really like.

Mememe claims/product details:
  • Seductive, extreme pay-off baked palettes
  • Catwalk inspired
  • Can be applied wet or dry to create bold and beautiful eyes
  • Five quads available
  • Shelf-life after opening: 12 months
  • RRP $18.95
  • Currently on special for $9.48 on the Mememe website

In the pan the colours look quite defined, although they're less so when applied. The top two shades (above) especially seem to run into each other a bit.

The shadows also aren't very pigmented and you have to work pretty hard to get them to show up. For this reason, you may prefer applying them wet to get more mileage from them.

As you may know, I don't mind products that aren't super pigmented (they tend to be easier to work with), but these cross the line and become hard work in themselves because you have to build them so much when applying them dry.

The above shot is taken indoors, with flash. The below is taken outside in natural light. You can tell how sheer they are, and also how the two middle greens aren't that defined (see especially photo below). Shade three isn't a far cry from shade one, either.

There we are on my eyes (below). I've applied the darkest shade as a liner, the lightest green on the inner lid, colour number two in the crease (applied very heavily) and colour three on the rest of the lid and above the crease. You can see how the colours don't stand out that much when applied dry.

Verdict

As mentioned, I was pretty disappointed with this quad. While it looks nice in the pan and is a great little compact for travel, the shadows themselves don't perform as well as I'd hoped.

The first thing to note is that they're really hard - so hard that you wonder whether you're managing to pick up any colour at all when you swipe your brush across them. They're also pretty chalky/gritty and don't feel that nice in terms of texture.

While I like the colours in theory, they're too sheer and look a little muddy when applied, and there's not a massive amount of difference between them. For this reason, they look better when used wet because you get more punch from them and the colours separate themselves more.

Also, lasting power is an issue. I don't have the oiliest eyelids on the street but these slipped on me very quickly. The liner shade ended up above my eye almost straight away (I have puffy eyes so there's always rubbing happening) and I wouldn't normally have that issue with a dry shadow. The colours all transferred within less than two hours and just looked like a faint green mess. The shadows last better with a primer of course, but I don't like relying on a primer when it comes to eye products - I think they should have a decent amount of staying power on their own.

The good news is, these only cost $9.48 at the moment and the range of colours available is interesting and fun. Fire Eyes in particular is a fresh and different mix of shades and I almost bought that one too at the time, although I'm now pretty glad I didn't due to the quality. But if you're happy to wear primer and are looking for pretty little quads that travel well and don't cost the earth, I guess you could do worse than these.

Just ok.
