Memebox Special #31 Earth & Sea Cosmetics - review

I can't tell you how excited I was last week to return home to this sitting on my doorstep - it's just that I had so much else to do this week and last, that only now am I coming to my initial review of the box. Plus, there'd been a delay with Memebox producing the September Affiliate codes (yes, I'm an affiliate, and this page does contain affiliate banners and links : )), so I wanted to wait until those came out before posting this.
I ordered a bundle of things from Memebox back in August, and while this was one of the more expensive boxes I ordered (RRP $29), I'm glad I ordered it and very glad I got in early because it sold out a while back.
Wow, what a pack of full-sized products! Can't wait to see what they are and what they're all for, and happily my gamble has paid off: you may remember that I took a punt on this box because I had no idea what was in it - all I knew was that I didn't want another 'normal' face cream or cleanser, or a bundle of makeup removers and scrubs etc that I felt like I'd tried a thousand times. That's why I went for picking up a few Memeboxes, rather than re-subscribing to Bellabox for another year.
Before we get stuck into things, here are my October Affiliate Codes:
- October $5 coupon code: 0IXX
- Get $10 off automatically at checkout when you spend $150 or more, using the link below
- Get $5 off automatically at checkout when you spend $100 or more, using the link below
Just click the Memebox banner to the right of this blog, or click here to enter the Memebox website and start shopping : )
On to the box!
Check out the card - all six products are full size - yaaaaayyyyyy!
What a bundle of products. I'm so glad I picked this box out of the stack on offer : )
Let's have a look at each item in turn.
Elizavecca Elastic Pore Mask Cleansing Foam (RRP $29 for 120ml; received full size)
Well, this one's worth the value of the box itself so I'm already happy. Apparently it's made from charcoal, collagen from pig's skin and spider extracts (WTF?!). It's a mask and cleanser all in one, and aims to penetrate deep into your pores, clearing away all the dead skins cells and blackheads with bubbles 'as fine as a spider's web'.
Well I never. Since I've recently finished off two cleansers, I'm 'allowed' to open this one straight away. Looking forward to it.
UPDATE: This one's a little weird on all counts. Apply it to a dry face, add a little water and massage it in for three to five minutes before washing off. Don't smell it too closely - it doesn't have a strong scent, but all I can think of when I smell it is pig fat.
It comes out black and goes grey when mixed with water, and has a kind of springy/spongey texture. While I like using it, I'm not sure whether it has the best effect and it doesn't feel as though it cleans that well (that could just be me - I like cleansers that foam a lot and feel refreshing). Still, I'm glad I got it and will definitely use it.
Ariul Spa Water 24 Hours Moisturising Refreshing Mist (RRP $18 for 100ml; received full size)
This is apparently made from pure spa water extracted from Belgium and rich in minerals and various amino acids. It delivers instant replenishment to your skin, creating a moisture barrier for preventing any dehydration all day long. It can also be used as a boosting serum for enhancing the absorption of other skincare products.
Well look, while I do have mist open in my handbag, there's no reason why I can't have another on the go in the bathroom. Yay! I only have one mist in my back up stores, so this is definitely something I'm glad to receive.
UPDATE: I really really like this one. It smells - and feels - so wonderfully refreshing, like spring water. It also has a nicely refreshing effect and brightens/hydrates your face, and I'm at risk of going through the bottle too quickly because I love applying it so much!
My favourite face sprays have always been MAC Fix+ and Happy Skincare's Raindrops on Roses Tonic, and this one is now on that list. I would definitely buy it.
Tosowoong Super Acqua Cooling Gel (RRP $34 for 80g; received full size)
This is an ultra-cooling cream gel that provides long-lasting freshness and comfort to the face and body. Full of minerals and nutrients from glacier waters, this gel is ideal for cooling overheated skin and relieving irritated skin. Deep sea minerals also strengthen and moisturise skin, leaving it firm and supple.
I'll put this aside for now until the height of summer - not so far away. And since I'll be in my third trimester then, I suspect this gel will be a god-send!
UPDATE: I've used this a few times now since the weather has started getting warmer. It comes in a beautifully heavy glass tub that somehow feels calming to look at (might be something to do with the marine-y colour).
I'll do a full review later on, but for now I'll just say that it feels nice and cool on the skin (so yes, it's definitely cooling) and feels a bit like aloe vera when applied, so it can be a little sticky but less so if used sparingly. I like it and am glad to have it, but it's not something I would buy.
Secret Nature Volcanic Ash Pore Pack (RRP $36 for 100g; received full size)
Enriched with organic Jeju complex and mineral rich volcanic ash, charcoal, green tea and pine needle extracts, this pore pack apparently works wonders for controlling excess sebum and tightening enlarged pores. Plus it's free of parabens, artificial fragrances and artificial colouring, and is suitable for all skin types.
This sounds exciting. I'm about to finish off my Cellilux Glacial Mineral Gel, so I'll move on to this one very soon and let you know how I go.
UPDATE: I'm loving this. It goes on smoothly and smells good - as though it's doing good to your skin. You apply it after toning and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Like any clay mask, it dries and can feel a little drying/tightening in the process, so you'll need to slather on the moisturiser afterwards.
While it's not as good as the Cellilux product (nothing I've found is), it's a good mask and it leaves my skin looking and feeling a bit nicer afterwards. I wouldn't buy it, but I'm enjoying using it - and my skin's enjoying it too.
Dewytree Mineral Healthy Sun Cut Loose Powder SPF 36 PA++ (RRP $34 for 10g; received full size)
This loose powder is enriched with natural minerals and essential oils for maintaining your skin's moisture levels and leaving a long-lasting silky finish to your makeup. It has a high SPF and uses an air pocket puff that does not clog the pores with powder application.
This is the only makeup item and, while I definitely don't need it (I have a few loose powders in the back up collection), it's the only one with such a high SPF - indeed, I don't think any of the others contain sunscreen. Since I've almost finished the powder I'm using and summer isn't far away, this has moved up the queue and I'll open it next. Yay!
UPDATE: I really like this and will do a full review of it at some point. It's a nicely compact and handy product that comes with a mirror and a sponge applicator (plus a back up sponge applicator). I don't normally like sponge applicators (they don't seem to work too well) but this is an exception; although do note that it doesn't always apply evenly and quite a bit of product seems to puff out into the air when used, so it takes a bit of practice.
It's gone into my little handbag makeup kit and I use it when it's hot and I'm getting a bit sweaty, and/or when I've applied a greasy sunscreen and need to balance that. While it does have a high SPF, I wouldn't rely on this as your only sun protection because you apply such a fine layer (although I'm no expert on these things).
It will probably take me a while to get through it since my skin tends towards dryness and I don't apply powder every day. Ticks from me : )
Shara Shara Black Charcoal Mask Purifying (RRP $2 for 23g; received full size)
This contains high concentrates of charcoal powder and volcanic ash complex for clearing the skin of any dirt, impurities and sebum clogging the pores. Apparently it also works to soothe and protect sensitive skin with its wine and aloe vera leaf formula.
Sounds good. Might even use it today. This whole charcoal/volcanic ash thing is really taking off, yes? Don't think I've ever used anything with charcoal in it, so happy to give this a go.
UPDATE: In the end, this was just like any other 'serial killer' mask (that's what Mex and I call them), except this one's black - that is, the mask itself is black but the fluid is clear. I didn't notice any special difference with this one, other than that my face felt a bit nicer afterwards and there was so much leftover essence that it was almost enough to cover my entire body. It was ok, nothing amazing.
In sum
My golly, what a box. For $29 outlay I received $153 worth of products that I'll actually use, that I haven't seen 1000 times before and that are interesting and generous in size. Could not be happier!
Memebox has definitely won me over with this one, my first ever box from these guys : )
