Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser - review

I was lucky enough to be selected as part of a review team recently, which means that a couple of products have shown up on my doorstep over the past week or so and I've been busily testing them.

First up is this Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, and since the review for that product is due today, I thought I may as well write my blog post at the same time and kill two birds with one stone.

While this isn't a terrible product and I think you could do a lot worse, it doesn't feel cleansing enough for my personal tastes so it's not one I would buy, but I think it would work well for lasses with super sensitive skin.

Cetaphil claims/product details:

  • Originally developed by dermatologists especially for sensitive skin
  • A soap substitute that preserves your skin’s natural protective oils
  • Softens your skin as it gently cleanses
  • Independent clinical tests using the product undiluted has shown it to be one of the gentlest non-soap cleansers
  • Its special formulation won’t sting your eyes and can remove light makeup without clogging pores
  • Developed to be used with or without water
  • pH balanced
  • Lanolin and fragrance free
  • Suitable for all skin types, including infants
  • RRP $23.99 AUD for 1L, but do shop around

It has standard flip-top packaging and comes in a plain white bottle that screams 'no frills, no fuss'.

Verdict

This is an ok product but it's not one I would buy because I don't feel that it cleanses well enough. I don't need all my cleansers to be super cleansing - and I do think it pays to have a gentle one for morning use - but this one crosses from gentle territory into 'doesn't work' territory so it's not one I would recommend if like me you need something with more punch.

It's a white, runny gel in texture and has a faint, clean scent that shouldn't bother most people who don't like fragranced products.

It feels quite nice on the skin when applied - silky and velvety - and I've enjoyed the feel of it against my skin, if nothing else. Do note that it doesn't foam, so be aware of that if you're used to foaming cleansers because the non-foaming aspect can take some getting used to.

I've tried this in the evening and it's terrible at removing makeup - even light makeup, which it claims it can handle. It also won't properly remove your sunscreen. Indeed, I definitely wouldn't recommend this as your only cleanser because I don't feel that it removes 'standard' grime well either. It's fine for a first-cleanse in the morning, but it's not something I would rely on to remove all the gunk from your face, makeup or otherwise.

Also, while it feels nice when applied, it doesn't leave my skin feeling nice and clean after use. On the two occasions that I've double-cleansed with this and haven't used anything else, I've really been aware of the dirt remaining on my skin. This makes me feel that it wouldn't be good for those with blemish issues or acne-prone skin, because I don't think it would get your skin clean enough that you could be sure of bacteria-removal.

In sum, I don't think this is a great cleanser and I can't recommend it. It doesn't leave my skin feeling clean, it hasn't done anything towards clearing up the blemishes I have at the moment, and it doesn't remove enough makeup and grime for my personal tastes. I'm all for gentle cleansers that don't strip the skin, but I think you can find gentle ones that do a much better job of cleansing (eg Mario Badescu's Enzyme Cleansing Gel, reviewed here).

This product might be ok if you have super sensitive skin and need something really gentle, but it doesn't do enough for me.
