Ahava Mineral Body Lotion - review

This sample body lotion came as a GWP and I've been saving it until now because I wanted a smaller body cream that I could take away with me.

I haven't tried anything from Ahava before so I was interested to see how it went, and after four days' use I'm ready to post on it - especially because there's not quite enough left for a full application tonight so it will soon be finished.

While normally I would test products for longer before reviewing them, with body lotion I don't feel the need to: it's not as though you're waiting for cumulative effects (as eg you would with a facial serum), and a body lotion only has one job in my books. That is, it should hydrate.

Ahava claims/product details:
  • A quick absorbing lotion that increases skin's moisture, providing it with all day comfort
  • Powered by nourishing healthy minerals and the enlivening scent of green plum and sandalwood
  • Aloe vera stimulates and elevates the natural hydration process for smooth, refined skin texture, while witch hazel extracts smooth skin, providing a refreshing, revitalising effect
  • Powering the entire product range is AHAVA's exclusive Osmoter - a perfectly balanced concentrate of Dead Sea minerals that effectively replenishes, rehydrates and recharges the skin
  • Approved for sensitive skin
  • RRP $38.50 AUD for 250ml, but do shop around

Verdict

This is a nice product but it hasn't convinced me that I need to spend $40 on a body lotion. In my view, there are things to spend money on and things to save money on - and I reckon body products fall in the latter category.

It's a thin, white lotion with a light, refreshing scent - there's something clean and ocean-like about the fragrance that I enjoy. The product is so lightweight in texture that I would almost call it a hybrid gel/cream, so if you don't like heavy body products, then something like this might suit you.

I've been applying this in the evenings after my shower and it's a good time to test something like this because my skin is drier than usual - I guess because it's hot, we're outdoors all day in the sun and I'm probably quite dehydrated.

I like that I don't need to apply too much per application, although I have managed to get through almost 40ml of product in four days so I would be getting through the 250ml full-size in under a month. That to me isn't $40 AUD well-spent.

It spreads and applies well, and while I do think it hydrates, it's nowhere near nourishing enough for my dry skin and my poor body has been feeling rather tight during the testing period. Yes my skin is drier than usual, but a good body cream should help with that and this one hasn't.

It also leaves a tacky film on the skin that won't be for everyone, and while it's not terrible, I'm certainly aware of it. The film also makes me think that not all of the product is absorbing, which could be why it's not moisturising my skin as much as I would like.

On the claims: yes it absorbs quickly but not completely; yes it moisturises but not enough, and it definitely doesn't give me 'all day comfort'; and no I don't think it effectively replenishes, rehydrates and recharges the skin - although it does do these things a little, it doesn't do them enough for me personally.

Overall I think this product is fine but it's not perfect and I certainly wouldn't spend this much on a body cream - especially when I can find better ones in the chemist or supermarket for a fraction of the price.

Nice but not for me.
