Revlon Balm Stain in 001 Honey - review and swatches

I've owned this product for ages now and it's yet another item that's been up for review for ages - especially because it's now on my Project Pan list so I need to review it before I finish it.
I guess we're getting there. If I do a review or two every day for the next week or so, perhaps I can pull myself out of this backlog territory. We'll see.
Anyhoo! I didn't buy this product: it came in Priceline's makeup baggie last year, and it's one of the few products from that baggie that I've really enjoyed.
Indeed, that should tell you something about those bags: they're good value if you need to buy a few things anyway (thereby spending enough to qualify for the baggie), but I wouldn't necessarily buy things just to get it. In my experience, you usually end up with a lot of stuff and a good deal of it won't suit you. Same goes for the haircare and skincare baggies. Or maybe that's just me.
Enough rambling. Let's have a look.
Revlon claims/product details:
- A lip crayon that provides a flush of stained colour
- Infused with a triple-butter complex of shea, mango and coconut butter
- Features a light peppermint fragrance
- Propel design means there's no need for sharpening
- Available in: Honey, Cherish, Lovesick, Charm, Sweetheart, Smitten, Romantic, Adore, Crush and Rendezvous
- RRP $19.95 AUD for 2.7g, but do shop around

Verdict
This is a good product. Yes I'm not a lip crayon kind of gal and I wouldn't go out and buy one of these, but I'm happy with mine and I haven't minded using it consistently via Project Pan.
It's a standard crayon with a twist-up arrangement so you don't need to sharpen it. It smells like peppermint and while I was worried about this to start with because I have a mild intolerance to peppermint (especially on my lip area), I can tolerate this product so that's a plus.
I think the 'Balm Stain' name is accurate because that's exactly what it is. It feels more like a hard balm in texture but it does hang around on the lips reasonably well so I can see why they've called it a stain too.
What I like about this product is that it's hydrating enough that I can wear it by itself on my dry lips and know it will keep them feeling comfortable without the need for a separate balm. I also like that it has a slightly glossy look that's very wearable and perfect for every day.
Note also that you can wear this more softly for a 'just bitten' kind of look but also build it up for more impact, so it's a versatile little product and great for the handbag because you can throw it on without a mirror and forget about it.
One thing I don't like about the formula is that it doesn't do anything for my lip lines. Sure it doesn't emphasise them, but it doesn't minimise them either - and I'm at the age now where smoothing lip products are something I look for. Indeed, that's probably the main reason why I wouldn't buy one of these (that and the whole 'I'm not a lip crayon person' thing).
'Honey' is a wearable dusty pink shade with enough mauve in it that I can wear it (pink normally doesn't suit me). It's the kind of colour that should suit a lot of people.
Overall I think these crayons are good and the formula is nice, but they're not my perfect lip products for the reasons I've mentioned.
Decent.
