We received this sample Hourglass Lip Stylo in our last Mecca Beauty Loop box, and I was pleased to receive it because I'd been wanting to try the formula for a while after having heard good things about it.

The thing is, though, that I personally wouldn't throw money at a fancy lip crayon. For some reason I feel like the crayon form 'cheapens' a high-end product, so while I might buy a budget crayon if the formula was amazing (although admittedly I'm not a crayon person anyway), the idea of dropping wads of cash on high-end crayons just doesn't sit well with me.

Maybe I'm weird.


Thankfully I'm pleased to report that the formula is lovely, and while I personally wouldn't rush out and buy one of these, if you're a crayon person then I think the range is worth testing at least.

Do note, though, that in typical crayon fashion you're getting a smaller amount of product for your money - only 2.5g in this case - so that's something to consider because a high-end lipstick might cost you the same but give you 4g of product for your troubles.

Verdict

Despite my reservations over the idea of purchasing a lip crayon that costs this much, I can't deny that the formula is beautiful and that I'm really enjoying mine.

It's a standard twist-up arrangement and the product has a scent that's sort of a cross between a lipstick and a crayon (which I suppose makes sense). It's not a particularly enjoyable smell but it's not offensive either.

The product applies smoothly without tugging and it offers an opaque coverage with a swipe on each lip. I love how smooth and creamy it is, and also how hydrating it feels on the lips. It's exactly the kind of formula that my dry lips need, so it has that going for it.

I also love the shiny, flattering finish, and I agree that it gives you the illusion of a fuller pout. It also does something towards plumping up lip lines, although it's not as plumping as many of my glosses are, and you can see in the above photos that it smooths the lips a little but many of my lip lines are still there.

One thing to note about these is that they go on pretty thickly, which of course means that you'll burn through the product - or at least that's what I've done. This little 1.5g sample has been vanishing before my very eyes, so of course the 2.5g full-size wouldn't be a good investment for me because I would finish it too quickly.

'Peacemaker' is a lovely peachy nude shade that should suit a lot of people. It's the kind of colour that you can wear every day and with just about anything, and it's definitely my kind of nude: I'm more of a peachy nude person than I am a pink one.

On the claims: yes this offers great colour payoff and intense hydration; yes it softens the lips and also nourishes them; yes it gives the appearance of a fuller pout and yes it has a lustrous finish.

Do note that the colour isn't long-lasting and it will come off on your coffee cup, but it does hang around longer than other creamy products so that's something to keep in mind. 

Also note that it's a very smooth, plush kind of formula that isn't sticky and that does feel luxurious on the lips, so I'm definitely aware that I'm wearing an expensive product when I use this - which is of course what you want if you're going to spend money on it.

Overall I think this is a great product and the formula is gorgeous. Sure, I'm not about to run out and spend piles of money on a bunch of lip crayons, but I do like this and I'm glad I've had the chance to try it.
