The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG - review
/
0 Comments
I can't remember how many products I've reviewed from The Ordinary over the past year, but it must be five or six by now - and I still have more to go.
Like many, I bought quite a few products from The Ordinary when I could get my hands on them, and I've been introducing them one-by-one so I can review them each separately and on their own merits.
Next up is this eye serum. I really like it. And I'm not the only one.
The Ordinary claims/product details:
- This light-textured formula contains an extremely high 5% concentration of caffeine, supplemented with highly purified Epigallocatechin Gallatyl Glucoside (EGCG) from green tea leaves
- Independent studies have shown that topical use of both caffeine and EGCG can help reduce the look of puffiness and dark circles in the eye contour
- Additional studies have shown that caffeine can also reduce the appearance of cellulite
- Supplied in UV-protective packaging: EGCG is sensitive to light
- To use: massage a small amount onto the eye contour AM and PM
- RRP $12.70 AUD for 30ml
Worth noting is that The Ordinary's website states the following:
1. Hollowness in the eye contour as a result of structure of sub-dermal tissues like fat and bone can result in visible shadows under the eyes. This shadow, which is not to be mistaken for dark circles, cannot be addressed with topical skincare including this formula.
2. Fat deposits under the eye contour can create permanent puffiness in this area. This type of deposit cannot be improved with topical skincare, including this formula.
I like that they've spelled this out, I must say. So many brands promise the world with their products so we're expecting miracles and don't get them. I like that The Ordinary has set us straight.
I mean, I already knew that nothing could help my eye puff - I have hooded eyes and also raised bags under my eyes, both of which are genetic (I've always had them, and of course they're getting worse with age) - and for once someone has said: 'Sorry, our product can't help you with that.'
Good on them.
Verdict
Despite the fact that this eye serum can't help with my hooded eyes or my under-eye bags, I still think it's a good product and it definitely adds something to my routine.
It's a pale yellow serum with no scent that I can detect. It has a lightweight, thin texture and a little goes a long way so this bottle is going to last me ages.
I apply mine in the morning because I like the effect it gives and because I also prefer a richer, more hydrating product for night. On that, I wouldn't say that this product is particularly hydrating so you may wish to layer an eye cream over it if dry skin is a problem for you.
Having said this, I do have dry skin and I don't feel the need to apply anything over this - so it could be that this alone is enough to keep your eyes feeling comfortable throughout the day. It certainly does this for me.
What I like about this product is that it has a brightening, firming/toning effect. As soon as I apply it, my eyes look more awake and they also feel firmer - plus it has a plumping effect so it does something for my fine lines. Sure, it doesn't make my eye area look younger on a long-term basis, but it does achieve that for a good few hours after I've applied it.
The claims mention that caffeine and green tea can help reduce the look of puffiness and dark circles in the eye contour. Now I haven't noticed anything like that going on, although I imagine that if your dark circles/puffiness aren't the result of genes (but instead flow from not having had enough sleep, for example), then you may have more luck - and note that a lot of people do say that this product brings those kids of results (see eg the reviews on Adore Beauty's website).
Overall I think this is an excellent product and I recommend it. While it hasn't offered miracles, it does make my eyes look brighter and firmer, and it also improves the tightness of my eye area (which in turn can help with eyeshadow application, since eyeshadow goes on more smoothly over firmer skin). Plus it plumps up my lines after application so I look a bit younger when I'm using it.
An excellent product. I'll be repurchasing it for sure.
