Clinique Pep-start 2 in 1 Exfoliating Cleanser - review

This has been on my list of products to review for a while, but I kept forgetting to do so and I also couldn't find the photos I'd edited so it wasn't until this morning that I finally found my draft post among all the others.
That's the issue with having too many draft posts loaded with thirty-plus photos each (most of which will be out-of-focus). In the old days I only had around thirty drafts at any given time - a good amount that gives you options but not too many - but these days I'm sitting on around seventy and it's all too much. Things start to get lost.
Anyhoo. This cleanser slash exfoliant. It's fine, it's usable and I've liked using it, but it's not the best product of its nature that I've tried and I wouldn't go out and buy one (this was a GWP).
Indeed, I could say that of most Clinique skincare I've tried to date - so it's safe to say that it's not my brand and I'll be sticking with what I know from now on.
Clinique claims/product details:
- Cleanse and scrub for a smooth finish and daily glow
- Natural papaya plus bamboo beads smooth the skin
- Gentle enough for all skins to use twice a day
- The ultimate fuss-free, 2-in-1 cleansing solution for a smooth, refined complexion
- This cooling hybrid formulation gently dissolves dirt, excess oil and impurities while sloughing away dulling dead skin cells to reveal a fresh, glowing complexion
- Infused with papaya extract for a gentle but effective enzymatic exfoliation, supported by the manual action of natural silica and bamboo beads
- RRP $12 AUD for 30ml or $29 AUD for 125ml
Verdict
This product is good but it's not amazing so it's not one I would buy.
It's an orange gel that contains smooth little beads so it gives a manual exfoliation while also cleansing your skin. I use a pea-sized amount a few times a week and it does lather a little when you add water, but it's not one of those crazy foaming cleansers that's too astringent and the pH sits at around six.
What I like about this is that it gives a really good clean without stripping the skin. In my experience it's not as easy as you might think to find a cleanser that cleans really well but doesn't have a high pH and that's not too astringent. This one fits the bill nicely and it also gives you an added layer of efficacy due to the exfoliating grains.
On that, I like that the beads in this aren't too abrasive so they should suit those who don't like harsh manual exfoliants. The claims say you can use this twice-daily if you want to, and while I personally think that would be too much for my dry skin, perhaps there are those with oily, congested skin who might prefer to use it that often.
On the claims: yes this both cleanses and scrubs the skin; yes it smooths the skin and removes dead skin cells; and yes it gently dissolves dirt and impurities to leave your skin feeling clean and looking fresh.
Overall I think this is a good little product that generally meets its claims and I recommend it. Sure, it's not a bells-and-whistles kind of product so it hasn't blown my other cleansers and exfoliants out of the park, but I do think it's decent and it's also not super expensive so that's a huge plus.
Decent.
